We are excited to share our paper, "Regularity and Stability Properties of Selective #SSMs with Discontinuous Gating", published in Transactions on Machine Learning Research (#TMLR2026), where we study how a model can remember what matters while reliably forgetting what no longer does! Why bother? Because it provides verifiable stability guarantees and a practical regularizer for SSM models, enabling more reliable long-horizon processing of robotic sensor sequences and asynchronous event-camera streams!

Selective #StateSpaceModels (SSMs), such as #Mamba, have become powerful tools for long-sequence modeling. However, their input-dependent, potentially discontinuous gating makes their stability particularly challenging to analyze: their dynamics change from token to token and do not fit either the classical linear time-invariant setting or standard smooth nonlinear analysis. We develop an energy-based perspective on selective SSMs using passivity, dissipativity, and Input-to-State Stability (ISS). Our main results show that:
- Strict dissipativity guarantees exponential forgetting, uniformly across admissible selection schedules.
- Even under discontinuous gating, the frozen-selection subsystem admits a canonical quadratic energy-storage structure.
- Universal quadratic storage leads to verifiable parametric Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) conditions and reveals "irreversible forgetting": once a state direction becomes energy-less, no subsequent selection can make it observable again.
- Sufficient conditions can guarantee global Input-to-State Stability uniformly over admissible selection schedules.
- These theoretical results can be translated into a sampled block LMI for the Mamba selective-scan core and used as a differentiable training-time regularizer.
Across seven time-series datasets and four prediction horizons, our regularizer:
- Reduced sampled Mamba-core LMI violations by approximately 92% across all 28 datasetโhorizon pairs.
- Kept the clean-MSE cost below 0.018%.
- Improved internal passivity and state-norm diagnostics under injected perturbations.
We believe this work builds a concrete bridge between classical control theory and modern sequence modeling, turning stability concepts into verifiable structural conditions and practical training criteria for selective SSMs. Importantly, we also carefully distinguish guarantees for the Mamba selective-scan core from claims about the complete deep architecture.
