The doyen for doors and doorways from the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast #EastQuantoxheadToDunster leg #StMaryQuantoxhead: South door. You'd be forgiven for thinking the carpenter had only a frail grasp of geometry but the mason made the hole he just filled it #AdoorableThursday
The doyen for doors and doorways from the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast #EastQuantoxheadToDunster leg #StMaryQuantoxhead: Detail of south door interior to porch. Fine planked, filleted and studded door. Perpendicular-style pointed panels #AdoorableThursday
The doyen for doors and doorways from the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast #EastQuantoxheadToDunster leg #StMaryQuantoxhead: Originally very roughly hewn doorway extensively repaired with more regular dressed stone. The 4-centred head cut in two pieces is a bit wonky #DoorwayThursday
The doyen for doors and doorways from the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast #EastQuantoxheadToDunster leg #StMaryQuantoxhead: Cavetto moulded pointed doorway to the south porch. Jambs of Blue Lias, head of sandstone which is kibbled with a margin to the intrados #DoorwayThursday
The finest #FromInsideOut from the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast #EastQuantoxheadToDunster leg can be found at #StMaryQuantoxhead. The joy of light. The joy of #JustPlainGlass in a church
As #FontsMeanFarewell it's time to move on to review the next and last leg of the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast from 2025. Leg four: #EastQuantoxheadToDunster Part A: #StMaryQuantoxhead #StDecumanWatchet
It's so late but it's never too late to declare a fantastic font winner from the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast #HuntspillToKilve leg: #StMaryCannington. Not only a beautifully carved C15 font but unusually for churches these days it's in a lovely uncluttered setting #FontsOnFriday
Reflections of East Quantoxhead...
While Mouse was scrabbling around looking for her favourite photo for the week she realised she'd not tweeted this. Traditional saddle and stanchion window bars but, looking at the patina, possibly not C15 originals #StMaryQuantoxhead #Somerset
Options abounded and Mouse was still um'ing and ah'ing right up to the wire, but this is the #MouseFavouritePhoto from #StMaryQuantoxhead #Somerset #ItsAllAboutTheLight
Through tower arch #StMaryQuantoxhead #Somerset
for #WindowsOnWednesday
Fragments of (possibly) medieval glass can be seen in the Perpendicular tracery. The C14 double chamfered pointed arch is unusual as rather than being continuous each order has small moulded abacii
And as #FontsMeanFarewell what of the church of #StMaryQuantoxhead #Somerset? A beautiful and interesting church, but sadly it's not been maintained in a sensitive way, especially the use of cement mortar. It's still worth 3/5 but turn a blind eye #MusVisit πππ
The enduring allure of #ChurchDoorFittings...
This tiny pear ring pull with it heart shaped fixing plate is clinging on by a single screw. It needs some love

The enduring allure of #ChurchDoorFittings...
Nail fitted, the circular ring pull fixing plate has little key shapes around the circumference. It's not clear if these are decorative or were designed to act as a real escutcheon

Base of font #StMaryQuantoxhead #Somerset for #FontsOnFriday
Opposing octagonal faces top and bottom. Inflexed edges, and concave faces, taper from bottom face to top. Mouse been in the church architecture and sculpture game for a long time. But what's that geometry called?
Tower arch #StMaryQuantoxhead #Somerset for #FontsOnFriday
'Goblet' style font. Octagonal basin, stem and base. Mouse can find no reference to it, but the style and carving suggests early C15. Residual pigment suggests that at some time the font was entirely white
Decorative detail #StMaryQuantoxhead #Somerset for #FontsOnFriday
Square set pointed quatrefoil to each side of font basin (left). Cusped panels to stem. Pigment residue is clearly visible.

Blocked north door #StMaryQuantoxhead #Somerset for #FerrousFriday
Try desperately to screen out the by now familiar cement mortar crime and drink in these medieval drive pintles. Not just a #Pintle, this is #PintleLove
Time for some of Mouse's #FridaysBitsAndPieces from #StMaryQuantoxhead #Somerset. The bits and pieces Mouse didn't get to share during the week: At last a real one. Mass or scratch dial. The hole didn't hold the original gnomon because, guess what, that's in modern cement mortar
Time for some of Mouse's #FridaysBitsAndPieces from #StMaryQuantoxhead #Somerset. The bits and pieces Mouse didn't get to share during the week: Grave marker on its own little podium adjacent to the small slit light in the eastern end of the south porch
Time for some of Mouse's #FridaysBitsAndPieces from #StMaryQuantoxhead #Somerset. The bits and pieces Mouse didn't get to share during the week: #ThingsThatMakeMouseGoHmm. The other side of the tomb and a blocked aperture with label above. If only Mouse had her tape measure
Chancel. North #StMaryQuantoxhead #Somerset for #TombTuesday
Canopied chest tomb. Canopy and chest were made at different times by masons of very different levels of mastery as indicated by the canopy's fine bratishing (cresting moulding) and the chest's roughly carved panels
Time for some of Mouse's #FridaysBitsAndPieces from #StMaryQuantoxhead #Somerset. The bits and pieces Mouse didn't get to share during the week: Chancel through screen. Although a C19 reimagining, this tracery looks C15. It was perhaps originally three #Ogee openwork panels
Time for some of Mouse's #FridaysBitsAndPieces from #StMaryQuantoxhead #Somerset. The bits and pieces Mouse didn't get to share during the week: Let's get the boring neeky one out of the way; fragment of pigmented and battlemented wall plate, south porch (zoom in for woodworm)
