Henry Koster's biblical story set in the aftermath of the crucifixion of Jesus sends across the right message of humanity and kindness.
There have been several grand epics made on biblical subjects that have been cherished for years. Koster's biblical tale may not be as popular, but it certainly serves its purpose. It's a story that explores the consequences of the crucifixion of #Jesus of Nazareth and how it changes the man who crucified the Son of God. That's a very powerful angle, both emotionally and devotionally. God sacrificed himself for these people so that they could turn from evil to good, choose peace over violence and show kindness instead of cruelty. As far as the message is concerned, this is a very fine film to look at. However, it does come with some flaws. The story follows Roman tribune Marcellus Gallio, who is ordered to crucify Jesus in Nazareth. His slave Demetrius wants him to seek forgiveness, but he doesn't listen. When Demetrius puts the robe on Gallio's shoulders, it begins to haunt him. Soon, he starts changing. He returns to marry Diana but is sent back to find the robe and destroy it. But God has other plans. Instead, he becomes one of the Christians and follows the path shown by Jesus Christ. Will that put his life in danger as the Romans consider it an act of treachery? Richard Burton plays the lead role with full conviction, while Jean Simmons looks gorgeous as Diana, as expected. Victor Mature suits the role of Demetrius, but I wish he had more space. Michael Rennie, Jay Robinson, Dean Jagger and others have done well. Koster doesn't show the face of the actor portraying Jesus, which was understandable and quite a trend back then, but he successfully carries the emotions through the character. He could have added a few scenes about the resurrection of Jesus and made it more magical. Despite those flaws, The Robe is a very much watchable biblical epic. More than the robe itself, it's about the message that Jesus always wanted to spread to mankind.
RATING - 6/10*

Siglo I d.C. ¡Ladrones! ¡Asesinos!
