#Kerala : #Kochi duo among three arrested after CBN seizes 12 crore Tramadol tablets
The Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN) has arrested two men from #Kochi and another from #Bengaluru for allegedly attempting to divert a massive export consignment of #Tramadol tablets into illicit international channels, exposing a Kerala link in one of the country's biggest interceptions of the #syntheticopioid.
The arrests were made under #OperationVajra, a nationwide enforcement drive carried out between July 10 and 20 across Bengaluru, Delhi and Kochi by CBN's preventive teams, with support from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) units in Bengaluru and Kochi, besides other agencies.
Officials seized an export consignment comprising 120 million (12 crore) high-strength Tramadol Hydrochloride (250 mg) tablets, weighing nearly 30 metric tonnes, from a warehouse in #Delhi.
Though the shipment was declared as being bound for #Guinea-Bissau, preliminary investigations indicated that its actual destination was #Libya, where it was allegedly meant to be diverted into illegal trafficking networks.
Officials said the consignment was flagged after CBN's risk-based export control mechanism detected multiple red flags.
Verification carried out with the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) and authorities in Guinea-Bissau established that the declared destination had been misrepresented, prompting coordinated enforcement action.
CBN first arrested the director of a Bengaluru-based limited liability partnership (LLP).
Investigators later traced the alleged masterminds to Kerala.
Despite repeated attempts to evade authorities, sustained intelligence gathering led to the arrest of the two key conspirators from Kochi.
All three have been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and further investigation is underway.
Tramadol is a synthetic opioid painkiller prescribed for moderate to moderately severe pain.
While it has legitimate medical uses, it is also a narcotic associated with risks of addiction, abuse and misuse.
In India, the drug is classified as a Schedule H1 medicine under the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules and is regulated as a psychotropic substance under the NDPS Act, meaning it can be dispensed only against a valid prescription issued by a registered medical practitioner.
CBN seized 12 crore Tramadol tablets under Operation Vajra and arrested three suspects from Bengaluru and Kochi. The agency said the operation prevented the illegal export of the consignment.
