#News about the #ancestry of the #Tyrolean #Iceman #Ötzi : In 3250 BCE a man lived in the Alps of today's Tyrol, who is called "Ötzi" after the place, where he was found. Experts and the general public were delighted when the #freezedried #mummy was found in 1991. After all, it is the oldest surviving mummy that mummified naturally. The current dark #skincolor of the "Tyrolean Iceman" was explained by a darkening due to the long laytime. However, according to a recent study by Ke Wang et al. (2023), this assessment was wrong. When Ötzi's #genome was completely #sequenced by Keller et al. in2012, it was the first time that the genome of a mummy was completely reconstructed. However, refined technical possibilities in #moleculargenetic sequencing have now provided a more precise picture of Ötzi's genetic predisposition by Ke Wang et al.. Accordingly, he showed genetic and probably also in his physical appearance characteristics that marked him as a descendant of #Anatolian #settlers who had immigrated to the region and established #agriculture and animal husbandry. He had darker skin than is common in modern southern Europeans and had a tendency to accelerated hair loss. There was a tendency to diabetes and a predisposition to obesity. So he showed characteristics of immigrant settlers from the Middle East, from the area of today's Anatolia, who had there established agriculture by about 8,300 BCE and subsequently migrated to Europe (M. Feldman et al., 2019). With them they brought their knowledge and experience of agriculture to Europe, which was still unknown there. It is interesting that the period, in which Ötzi lived, is quite a long way from the known immigration event and that he nevertheless shared about 91 percent of his genome with these immigrants. The authors of the 2023 scientific work thus assume that the group in which the iceman lived spent a long time largely #isolated from European settlings. The older study from 2012 was carried out using the ABI SOLiD sequencer platform, had a comparatively low #coverage with regard to the sequenced genome and also a relatively high #contamination with modern human DNA. With the help of the #Illumina technology, on which the new study was based, the coverage was significantly higher with simultaneous lower modern human contamination (0.5% ± 0.06%). Sequencing in the recent study as well as the 2012 study was performed using the same left iliac bone. In addition to the better genomic coverage of the new study, more comparative data from individuals who lived at the same time as Ötzi was available today compared to 2012. From this it could be concluded that the previously reconstructed resemblance to Sardinians actually points to just widespread traits. But must characteristics that are anchored as a predisposition in a person's genome also have been present phenotypically? Although earlier histological sections of the skin have already provided evidence of strong melanin deposits, it is otherwise the case that the phenotype is often additionally shaped by environmental factors that affect the growing human being. According to A.G. Nerlich et al. (2020), in addition to various pathologies, Ötzi also had #parasites: for example #Trichuris trichiura and gastric bacteria (Helicobacter pylori). This raises the question for me to what extent these parasites can also be traced back to immigrants from the Middle East rather than to European conspecifics. © This blog post #StefanFWirth Berlin 2023. These tasty-looking trout gather all around the edges of the very clear Hintersteiner See (900 m above sea level) in the #Tyrolean Alps. A decent food source for the right bird(s), but none in are sight 😪. Good hunting for #Osprey, #Heron, #Egret??? #Austria #Oesterreich

A #Tyrolean scene, but on top of a house, rather than a grave! This #SmallBrownBird would retreat to a safe distance on the neighbour's roof whenever I came closer to see their nest under the eves. #Austria #Oesterreich #HouseSparrow #TwitterNaturePhotography #birdwatching
