@AwakenChirp FAAACCTTSS 💯 It wasn't even called "Christianity" until the Italians massacred 1000's of Abunas/monks btwn 1936-1941 and taught them that! It was and is still called #tewahedo which refers to the Onesness. Most do not know the Etymological meaning of "Christian"... look it up.

Ten Arguments to Respond to Criticism of #Tigrayan #Orthodox Participation in #EOTC Ceremonies
Some #Tigrayans express deep apprehension or criticism toward fellow Tigrayans who publicly celebrate religious ceremonies within the #Ethiopian Orthodox #Tewahedo #Church, arguing that such participation symbolizes support for those who enabled or justified the genocidal war on #Tigray. This reaction is rooted in real trauma, moral injury, and a profound sense of betrayal. Yet strong philosophical arguments challenge the assumption that a Tigrayan’s religious participation constitutes complicity in institutional wrongdoing. I draw these ten arguments from moral #philosophy, political #ethics, #theology, and post-conflict #healing.
1. Moral Individualism and Personal Responsibility
A central argument comes from the Kantian principle of moral individualism: moral responsibility belongs to persons, not identities. To morally condemn someone, we must show personal, deliberate participation in wrongdoing. Membership in or worship within Ethiopian #Orthodoxy does not establish moral endorsement of actions taken by church leaders during the war. Collective guilt applied to individuals violates the Kantian imperative to treat people as autonomous agents, not symbolic extensions of institutions.
2. Association vs. Complicity
Hannah Arendt’s distinction between association and complicity is particularly relevant. Belonging to an institution does not make an individual morally responsible for its failures unless they actively participated in them. People remain within religious institutions for reasons rooted in culture, identity, tradition, or spiritual need rather than political allegiance. One may hold the Synod accountable while still participating in the spiritual life of the community.
3. Plural Identities and the Complexity of Belonging
Philosophers such as Charles Taylor emphasize that human beings carry multiple identities. A Tigrayan can be a survivor of genocide, a critic of the Ethiopian #Synod’s moral failures, and a devoted Orthodox Christian at the same time. No single identity cancels or dominates the others. Participation in a religious ceremony may be an expression of spiritual or cultural identity rather than a political statement.
4. Religion as Sacred Space Rather Than Political Arena
Sociological perspectives, especially those of Emile Durkheim, remind us that religious rituals connect individuals to the sacred and to each other, not to political authority. Even when leaders misuse religious institutions politically, the rituals themselves remain oriented toward the transcendent. A public celebration such as ጥምቀት, መስቀል, or “የአእላፋት ዝማሬ” should not be reduced to political endorsement, nor should a worshipper be understood primarily through a political lens.
5. Faith as Sanctuary for Trauma and Healing
Theological and trauma-informed perspectives highlight that faith often functions as a sanctuary for wounded people. Thinkers such as Paul Ricoeur and Judith Butler emphasize the human need for meaning-making after suffering. For many survivors, religious practice provides comfort, grounding, and hope. Criticizing or isolating individuals for seeking spiritual refuge risks inflicting additional harm. A Tigrayan participating in EOTC ceremonies may be choosing healing, not political reconciliation.
6. Distinguishing the Institution from the Local Community
Another philosophical argument distinguishes between the church as a national institution and the church as a lived community. Communitarian thinkers like Alasdair MacIntyre argue that belonging is rooted in real relationships, family, neighbors, local clergy, and the shared rhythms of life. A Tigrayan may attend a local Orthodox church because it is part of their community, not because they support the political stance of the Synod.
