Texas has rightfully earned her place in history as an unconquerable beacon of freedom, and that reputation was forged on this day, October 2nd, in the first battle in the Texas War for Independence at the Battle of Gonzales. In 1835, roughly 100 Mexican dragoons were dispatched to Gonzales to confiscate a small six-pounder cannon originally loaned to the settlement for defense against hostile raids. When the Texans caught wind of the order, a band of tenacious men buried the cannon in a nearby peach orchard and took up positions to guard the river crossing. As word spread, volunteers rallied to the call, unearthing the piece and preparing for combat. When the morning fog burned away on October 2nd, the Texans engaged the detachment under a defiant banner bearing a star, a cannon, and four immortal words: "Come and Take It." Outmaneuvered and facing determined armed resistance, the Mexicans quickly retreated. The courage and tenacity displayed at Gonzales helped ignite a revolution that would ultimately give birth to the Republic of Texas. That warrior spirit has not expired on our watch. The battleground may look different today, but the fundamental struggle remains the exact same: defending our heritage, our state sovereignty, and our God-given liberties against encroaching tyranny. The blood and resolve of our ancestors fuel our determination to hold the line today to keep Texas free.
