#Music in #ancient #Egypt served various functions in everyday life.
A recent #discovery from the #necropolis of West #Thebes is of interest within the cultural context of music and #religious belief.
It is likely that early musical #instruments produced their sounds by knocking and blowing, as these devices were relatively easy to manufacture. But #stringed instruments also played increasingly important roles in early ancient #societies.
One of the reasons for concentrating on the ancient Egyptian sphere here is the excellent #preservation of knowledge in the form of #archaeological #finds related to the Egyptian #funerarycult.
#Harps, #flutes, #drums, and #singing played an important role in ancient Egypt, specifically in the context of religious ceremonies. The use of the harp is documented from the Fourth Dynasty onward. The #memet, which the Greeks later called the #aulos, was often used as a wind instrument.
However, the #harpist held a special significance. In Egyptian inscriptions, he is often depicted in the foreground, #seated on the ground, usually with his #mouth slightly open to illustrate his deep immersion in his music. Furthermore, he is often clearly depicted as #blind, which underscores his close connection to the sky #gods.
Using #AI #assistance, I #reconstructed two musician scenes originally preserved as pictorials from ancient Egyptian contexts, thus giving them #threedimensionality and #color. The first of these #illustrations (Fig. 2) shows a blind harpist with a #fluteplayer sitting behind him.
The second illustration (Fig. 3) shows a harpist in front of the #god Re-Hor-achti, a syncretism of the deities #Ra and #Harakhty.
The gradual development of #musicalculture in ancient Egypt has been studied, e.g., by J. Pulver (2020) in his scholarly study.
A new find from the Theban West necropolis has the potential to shed light on the role of music in religious and festive contexts. The team led by archaeologist Hawi Zawass discovered 22 #sarcophagi with richly decorated exteriors and eight sealed #papyri in el-#Qurna, a specific area of the vast Theban necropolis, The find was not in a previously unknown location, but rather in the courtyard of a known tomb, where the newly discovered rectangular chamber had been hewn into rocks.
The coffins, whose #mummies were all preserved, were stacked in rows. They could be dated to the 21st to 25th Dynasties, the #ThirdIntermediatePeriod.
The unusual feature was that the coffins did not bear the names of the deceased, as was customary, but instead their #professions. The most frequently mentioned profession is "#Singer of #Amun."
It is assumed that the chamber was not the original, as yet unknown, burial site, but that the coffins were brought together there to protect them from grave robbers. #Researchers hoped the new find would provide deeper insights into the role of music and musicians in the Third Intermediate Period (Source: G.
