This Australian mystery thriller introduces a new wave of complex cinema.
The Last Wave is indeed very complicated for those who are unaware of the Aboriginal tribes, their curses, punishments, and mythic tales of Dreamtime. The film tells the story of a solicitor who takes on a challenging murder case, causing his personal and social life to unravel. He begins dreaming of apocalypses and feels a strange connection with reality and the eccentric individuals he meets. After encountering Charlie, he becomes increasingly interested in Aboriginal methods of murder and punishments that might help him solve the case. Meanwhile, the city is struck by a flooding disaster. He even sends his wife and children to safety, becoming consumed by a mystical Dreamtime, only to confront greater difficulties ahead. Will he be able to find the answers he seeks, or will he become a question himself? The reason this film is considered complicated lies in the mysterious world filled with limitless possibilities of disasters, including the one seen at the end, though I won't explain that to avoid spoilers. Yet, a few points can be discussed. The Shaman, Charlie, and Burton's every meeting leads you to believe in supernatural powers that even affect lives in reality. "Pointing a bone" is a new theory of murder we discover here. All those ancient relics, stone masks, mystical murals, and the final wave at the end—all of these are highly interesting but complex theories for an average viewer searching for a straightforward mystery thriller. This film takes you by surprise in that sense. You don't expect a solicitor's thinking to go that far, which makes this film unique and somewhat intricate to comprehend. Overall, a very interesting and complicated thriller that should be viewed only by discerning movie buffs.
