DRUGS?? WHAT DRUGS ??? 😆 🤣 #TheMagicRoundabout was a cult children’s television series that followed the surreal adventures of a group of animal and human friends in a psychedelic, magical garden. Originally a French stop-motion animation titled Le Manège Enchanté, it became a massive success in Britain during the late 1960s and 1970s due to its eccentric characters and witty dialogue. The British version of the show was created because the #BBC refused to use a direct translation of the original French scripts. The presenter Eric Thompson was given the silent film footage and told to invent entirely new stories and personalities for the characters based solely on their visual appearances. Eric Thompson provided the voices for every single character in the program and recorded the dialogue for each five-minute episode in a single take. He never watched the French episodes to understand the original plots, which resulted in the British version having a much more satirical and adult tone than the French creator had intended. The character of Dougal the dog was originally a very minor figure in the French series, but Thompson decided to make him the central protagonist for the British audience. He based Dougal’s grumpy and cynical personality on a stereotypical British civil servant, which helped the show appeal to adults as much as children. The show became so popular with adult viewers that the BBC eventually moved its broadcast slot from the afternoon to a time just before the evening news. It was one of the first children's programs to achieve a genuine "crossover" audience, with millions of office workers rushing home to catch the surreal humor before the daily headlines. The stop-motion puppets were incredibly small and were filmed on sets that were barely larger than a standard tabletop. The character of #Zebedee, the jack-in-the-box, had to be animated with great care because his spring made him very unstable, often requiring the animators to pin his base to the set with hidden needles. A persistent urban legend suggested that the show’s surreal nature was a coded reference to drug culture, but the creators always denied this theory.
