On every rewatch, I realize the tragedy of Stringer's arc comes down to his total lack of self-awareness. He spent his entire run trying to "civilize" the drug game, lecturing corner boys about elastic versus inelastic demand at his copy shop front like he was a Wall Street executive. But his biggest blind spot was his inability to recognize that he was a permanent product of the streets🤝 When he tries to leave the corner bullshit behind to buy up real estate and bribe his way into the construction industry, he walks right into a trap engineered by Clay Davis. Stringer thought he was out-smarting the system, but he was completely blind to the fact that downtown politics has its own unwritten rules that a street gangster couldn't possibly comprehend. As Avon perfectly laid it out right before the end, Stringer was a "man without a country", not hard enough for the pavement anymore, but completely out-mapped by the legitimate world. He spent all that time taking notes in class, yet it never even occurred to him to analyze the actual black-market economics of his own daily operation. #TheWire #Stringerbell #Avon #ClayDavis
