The #Schistosomatoidea are a well-known group of #parasites that infect not only #humans but also a vast array of definitive #hosts across a wide range of animal groups. Knowledge of the Schistosomatoidea (#Trematoda) dates back to the German physician and naturalist #Theodor Maximilian #Bilharz (1825–1862), who first elucidated the life cycle of the species now known as Schistosoma haematobium, a species initially described as #Bilharzia haematobium in his honor by the anatomist #Heinrich #Meckel (1821–1856). According to E. S. Loker et al. (2026), the Schistosomatoidea currently comprise 95 genera characterized by remarkable #ecological and #morphological #diversity; this diversity is impressive not only regarding the multitude of definitive and intermediate hosts from diverse animal groups but also concerning egg morphology and the development and morphological variety of the #larvae. The range of known definitive hosts for Schistosomatoidea species encompasses almost all major #vertebrategroups. They parasitize #cartilaginousfish, #turtles, #crocodiles, #birds, and, of course, #mammals. It is also worth noting that, based on evolutionary-phylogenetic grounds, the existence of reptilian and avian hosts suggests that Schistosomatoidea must have also been prevalent among #dinosaurs. In their work, the aforementioned authors also discuss in detail the current state of knowledge regarding the #phylogenetic position of the Schistosomatoidea within the Trematoda. They point out that #polyopisthocotylean #monogeneans have only recently been identified as the #sistergroup to the Trematoda. The Schistosomatoidea have retained a number of traits from the last common ancestor of Trematoda and polyopisthocotylean monogeneans; consequently, the authors hypothesize that they must branch off at a basal position within the #Digenea phylogenetic tree. These traits include, for instance, their #twohosts #lifecycles and broad #hostranges. The aforementioned high diversity of #intermediatehosts among the Schistosomatoidea is striking and unique within the Digenea. Researchers anticipate further surprising discoveries regarding this ecologically diverse group of parasites in the future, as #biodiversity research becomes increasingly efficient.
