Greetings family:
All of these rappers, actors, influencers, podcast hosts, athletes, and public intellectuals are dead wrong on the subject of the #Nword.
The word is a racial slur, no matter the spelling.
I don’t believe we’ve “taken it back.” I believe we’ve normalized it, commercialized it, and spread it around the world.
What amazes me is not that some people disagree with me. It’s that so many people seem unwilling to even have the conversation.
I’ve reached out to organizations, media personalities, scholars, activists, and commentators. Publicly. Privately.
Silence.
It’s easy to speak when there’s a sensational story, a camera, or a book to sell. It’s much harder to defend the idea that a word shouted while our ancestors were beaten, raped, and murdered should now be celebrated in our music, entertainment, and everyday speech.
Imagine explaining to Malcolm X, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Maya Angelou, John Lewis, or Assata Shakur:
“We decided to call ourselves - n*ggas, instead of n*ggers.”
I don’t think that argument survives serious scrutiny.
To those who believe otherwise—including public figures like #MichaelEricDyson, #MarcLamontHill, #AmandaSeales, #AngelaRye, or anyone else—I extend the same invitation:
Let’s have a respectful public discussion.
No shouting.
No personal attacks.
Just evidence, history, and ideas.
If I’m wrong, show me.
If I’m right, then maybe it’s time we reconsider what we’ve normalized.
Whether anyone accepts the invitation or not, I’ll continue making this argument.
I want future generations of Black people to know that some of us refused to accept the idea that embracing a racial slur was progress.

I want Black people in the future—especially my granddaughters—to know that not all of us went quietly into the night.
Many years ago, I accepted that my position on this issue of the #Nword, would lead to me being ridiculed, ostracized, and dismissed by large portions of the #BlackCommunity.
I carried on anyway, because I believe some truths are worth fighting for.
My position is simple:
The #Nword is a racial slur, regardless of how it’s spelled or pronounced. Not only that, but the loose usage of said word, is harmful to Black culture.
Put me in a room with 20 PhDs who disagree. Turn the cameras on, and I’ll prove it.
My argument is this:
As long as we’re proudly singing, celebrating, and normalizing the same word that echoed - while our ancestors were enslaved, raped, and murdered, we’ll never be able to tackle the major problems in our community.
I’m not claiming to be an expert on anything. There are Black scholars that will run rings around me on a variety of subjects.
However, on this thing here…
