#TodaysTrek is TNG S1EP07 Lonely Among Us:
Yikes. Going back & rewatching this 1st season, you really appreciate that no one making this series had any idea who these characters were or what they were supposed to do at this point. Not one single one acts in any way shape or…
#TodaysTrek is DS9 S02EP10 Sanctuary:
DS9 remains remarkable prescient & up to date as it presents a story about refugees, in a story that probably highlights how much our society has declined in the last 30 years. It’s a complex situation to portray in 45 mins but it’s deftly..
#TodaysTrek is TNG S02EP06 Where No One Has Gone Before:
A fairly hokum story, pure Roddenberry fantasy, but to be expected with a show just starting out that hasn’t embraced the word “continuity” yet. But it’s entertaining enough, passes the time & keeps you engaged:
#TodaysTrek is DS9 S02EP08 Necessary Evil:
Bajorans v Cardassians hasn’t missed the mark yet in this show, though this one could have done; a few twists though & it lands well. Firstly pulling back the curtain & showing us Occupation DS9 keeps things interesting, as does…
#TodaysTrek has spread a little & crossed a few streams. So so far today we have had:
TNG S01EP04 Code of Honour:
Utter tripe. Hats off to everyone for making something so racist, misogynistic & dated. Characterisation is all over the shop, it’s just *painful* to watch.
#TodaysTrek was TNG S01EP04 Code of Honour: AKA 45 minutes of my life I shall never see again….
#TodaysTrek is DS9 S01EP19: Duet. @stealexanderuk told me the other day that DS9 is Kira’s series & it forgets it too often; on the strength of this episode you can see why that’s true. Certainly the Kira episodes of this season have been the strongest for the most part.
#TodaysTrek is DS9 S01EP18: Dramatis Personae. We’re established with our characters enough now that we can do an episode where they go bad. Not that they really go bad though, it’s a very subtle change - Kira stays shouty & rebellious, Dax dreamy & serene, Sisko calm &…
#TodaysTrek is DS9 S01EP17: The Forsaken. It’s another decent episode, one that’s more of an ensemble piece than others, but still give some individual characters the chance to shine. It’s a good balance.
But what is it with early 90s Trek & sex pests…?
#TodaysTrek is DS9 S01EP16: If Wishes Were Horses. A return to the “Station in Peril” formula and a nice bit of fun all in all.
Could be better - there’s a few changes I’d make. Not for the first time I’d like a particular idea expanded on, this time the aliens behind the…
#TodaysTrek is DS9 S01EP14: The Storyteller. Which is another episodes you’re all going to tell me is shite, but isn’t.
It’s another Bajoran story, which stands it in good stead, but in fairness it could be any planet or race. In fact, it might be able to sell the…
#TodaysTrek is DS9 S01EP13: Battle Lines. The best episodes of this season so far have been the ones that focus on the Bajorans & Cardassians (give or take) & this is another one. Sisko, Kira & The Kai head off on an adventure that doesn’t end well for The Kai.
Which is a shame.
#TodaysTrek is DS9 S01EP12: Vortex. It’s another “Focus on a character” episode, and another Odo one at that, as he’s taken in by a Gamma Quadrant chancer, but it all ends well.
Odo’s a bit of a strange character in these early episodes. He’s sulky & prissy when questioned…
#TodaysTrek is DS9 S01EP11: The Nagus. In which Quark becomes The Nagus, but doesn’t.
That’s your plot. Weak episode then, yeah?
Wrong.
This is the start of DS9 doing what is does best: delivering depth of character & works in actual fathoms.
#TodaysTrek is DS9 S01EP10: Move Along Home. Which everyone thinks is shit. So obviously isn’t.
Is this DS9’s biggest victim of RFW? I think so. Sure, the episode pulls up no trees, and can easily be considered mid season filler, but if fills the season very nicely thank you.
#TodaysTrek is DS9 S01EP09: The Passenger. Having spectacularly failed to deliver a great Bashir episode with Babel, can we get one with The Passenger?
No.
It’s admirable of the DS9 team to move away from the squeaky clean hero types of TNG & make them more fallible but…
#TodaysTrek is DS9 S01EP06: Q-Less. It’s a harmless enough episode this one, that seems to have 2 main objectives. Firstly, give us some minor recurring characters from TNG to give us something familiar & comfortable, to remind us we’re in the same shared Star Trek universe.
#TodaysTrek is DS9 S01EP05: Babel. A story in which a virus sweeps the station, resulting in a lockdown of everyone but key workers & those who don’t think the rules apply to them.
Hmmmm….
Obviously this one lands a lot differently now to how it would on broadcast. And we’re…
#TodaysTrek is DS9 S01EP03 (as Netflix has it): Past Prologue. Enter Garak. Clearly no simple tailor, the relationship between Garak & Bashir will become one of the great highlights of this series; swing it start here is a delight, with Garak unnerving Bashir immediately as…
#TodaysTrek is DS9: A Man Alone, which Netflix has presented to me as the 2nd episode of the 1st series but I believe should be the 3rd. Hey ho. Nevermind.
After the action of pilot it’s time to spend some time with our characters, specifically Odo, probably the most…
