June 24th, 2026 Spotlight Player OTD: Michael Adams Michael Adams finished his final two seasons of an 11-year NBA career in Charlotte before retiring in 1996: But his career was all over the place before the Queen City, and largely front-loaded during his first few years with Denver. Drafted by the Kings in the 3rd round of the 1985 NBA Draft (66th overall) out of Boston College, Adams took a few pit stops before ending up with the Nuggets. The five-foot-nine point guard Adams wasn’t in Sacramento long before he landed in the CBA. In one year playing up north, Adams won rookie of the year and made their 2nd Team All Defense. Adams had a funky jumpshot from what I’ve found about him, enough so that it’s consistently joked about in print… but he was ahead of his time in terms of 3-point shooting for a small guard. He showed back up to the Association the year afterwards in 1986-1997 following just one year out of the NBA. Washington quickly traded him to Denver and head coach Paul Westhead, who is much less famously known as the inventor of the seven seconds than his spiritual successor Mike D’Antoni is with Phoenix and Steve Nash in the 2000’s. Westhead invented this methodology before Denver; employing this seven seconds or less attitude to Loyola Marymount to success which hinged on a system far ahead of its time. Paul Westhead inevitably brought this system to the NBA with Denver, and Michael Adams is a clear-cut example of how a coaches system can help build — or (not in Adams case) destroy — someone’s career. Adams got to Denver and used his volume three-point shooting tho his advantage, getting up 8.5 3PA (26.5 PPG, 10.5 AST, 2 SPG) per game by his final season with Westhead and Denver in ‘90-‘91. He never averaged less than 33.9 MPG at 5’9, and Westhead’s Nuggets’ teams put up gaudy offensive numbers under Adams’ helm: 120+ PPG in the late 80’s/early 90’s. The main issue? They gave up… 130+ PPG, as well. It was a flawed system, and despite Adams’ career year during his final 82 with Denver, it was an incredibly inefficient one. Adams move on back to Washington who gave him his first NBA chance, to begin with, despite a quick trade to DEN. He saw his only all-star appearance in his first year back with the Bullets, and two more season with Washington saw Adams sign with the Hornets as a reserve option for Muggsy Bogues. Adams split that reserve role with Tony Bennett his first season with the Hornets, and averaged 6.5 PPG in just over 15 minutes — Michael still played in a mere 29 games, though. Year two he only saw 21 games, but the Hornets PG depth in Adams’ final NBA season was borderline hoarding. By the end of the season, the Hornets had six rostered point guards and clearly no idea who another option was besides Bogues in ‘95-‘96 until the Hornets traded Khalid Reeves and Kendall Gill to the Nets for All-Star PG Kenny Anderson. Probably my least Hornets-relevant player spotlight, but I’m trying to get creative here, for sure. Adams first years in the NBA were super interesting to dive into.
