The award to the biggest rat bastard town planner goes to this ableist:
I asked why his plan only showed stairs and no wheelchair access.
“Well, maybe if people walked more, they would never need wheelchairs, he said.

This is a great way to safely maintain wheelchair accessible pedestrian mobility when the sidewalk is closed. New York uses these all the time, but they are virtually nonexistent in Miami. #WheelchairAccess #mobility #PerilsForPedestrians #UniversalDesign #Dignity #StreetDesign

From a #UniversalDesign design perspective, the ideal is usually the shortest practical accessible route that 1.) still meets slope and safety requirements; & 2.) minimizes travel distance while remaining usable for wheelchair users and others. Were any wheelchair users specifically consulted on the ramp’s design before it was constructed? #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs

Too much patchwork, narrow & dangerous curb ramp in one of the busiest places in Manhattan. E. Union Square & E. 16 St. — next to the Union Square subway station, the 4th busiest in all of New York. #WheelchairAccess #PerilsForPedestrians #UniversalDesign #ADA #dignity #mobility

Since it had to be light and easy to carry, an improvement over most collapsible wheelchairs, Kawasaki used a titanium frame, with aluminum honeycomb–core wheels and rubber seat and tires.

Industrial Designer Kazuo Kawasaki's goal was to create a wheelchair that felt as good, and looked as cool, as the newest pair of sneakers. The Carna, on display at MOMA, is colorful & has high–tech style. 1/2 #streetphotography #wheelchair #design #mobility @TheMuseumOfModernArt

This #DisabilityPrideMonth, we’re exploring the ways #TheCurbCutEffect improves things for everyone – in the #DisabilityCommunity and beyond.
Because #UniversalDesign means that each of us #Disabled and non-disabled, benefits from #Accessibility.

Swipe to see these before/afters! 👉 This outdated bathroom with an oversized whirlpool tub was completely redesigned into a clean, modern, accessible retreat.

Is there something in New York that makes taxi designers idiots incapable of doing this?
NO it’s something spineless about mayors, borough presidents, and council members who don’t give a crap about their constituents, having 100% accessible cabs.

To make things abundantly clear.
I support cyclists and bike lanes.
I love cities where a major amount of people commute by bike and transit.
What I can't stand is so-called bike-ped experts who look at wheelchair access as an inconvenient truth to be ignored.
#UniversalDesign

My impression of the typical town planner who neglects wheelchair access as part of multimodal mobility:
The sidewalks are narrow & obstructed.
“It has a bike lane.”
Most shops are inaccessible to people with disabilities.
“Pretty green bike lane.”

From captions to automated doors, inclusive design proves that accessibility is not a niche feature—it is better design.

"Superblue Miami (1101 NW 23rd St) is fully wheelchair accessible. All exhibition areas, pathways and surfaces are navigable by wheelchair.
But only stairs (we asked) lead to 2nd level of Es Devlin

Dear Superblue Miami.
I visited your immersive art experience.
In return for nearly $40 per ticket, please improve wayfinding.
The continuation of the exhibit (virtual spray painting) is up stairs. No signage to wheelchair accessible entrance.

The High Line has five public elevators for barrier-free access. This one is at 14th Street and 10th Avenue. At any given time, at least one elevator is out of service. Check https://t.co/SghgUYYAdY

What’s the difference between bare minimum ADA compliance & inclusive Universal Design?
A pair of horribly steep/bumpy power line covers on Ocean Drive at the Clevelander = the miserable minimum.

NEVER trust an architect that wants to create wheelchair accessible via a complex contraption. Bells & whistles feed ego. They also are high maintenance, cost prohibitive & prone to fail. A simple, durable ramp works 95% of the time. #UniversalDesign #WheelchairAccess #ableism

There are many ways to build access into everything our society creates with #UniversalDesign.
If we don't, it is our society that disables people!

Hate the limited use limited access lift at Temple of Dendur. Does the Metropolitan Museum of Art work with wheelchair users when designing? This cavernous room could accommodate a simple ramp. Lifts break down all the time. #ableism #wheelchairAccess #UniversalDesign @metmuseum
