‼️ #ViewerDiscretionAdvised ‼️ Flying Door Kick/Mag Dump Elyria officer fatally shoots armed robbery suspect after hostage taking in North Olmsted NORTH OLMSTED, #Ohio — An Elyria police officer fatally shot a robbery suspect on Jan. 21, 2026, seconds after the man forced a mother of four into her apartment at gunpoint following a high-speed chase. John P. Johnson, 37, of Lorain, robbed a Brinks driver at gunpoint around 3 p.m. outside an AT&T store on West River Road North in Elyria. He forced the driver into the armored truck, stole cash, and fled in a black Hyundai. Multiple agencies pursued him through Elyria and Lorain at speeds over 100 mph into North Olmsted. Spike strips disabled the vehicle near Brookpark and Columbia roads. Johnson crashed, jumped out armed with a .45-caliber Glock, and ran into an apartment complex on Clareshire Drive. Ring doorbell video shows him approaching a woman unloading groceries with her children. He pointed a gun, pushed her inside, and shut the door. Two children, ages 8 and 7, were left outside. Her 5-year-old and 9-month-old infant were inside with her. Elyria Officer Ali Sabeiha arrived as the door closed. Bodycam footage shows him telling the children outside to move, kicking the door open, and firing within less than a second after seeing Johnson’s gun pointed toward him while reaching for the woman. Sabeiha fired 15 rounds in under four seconds. Johnson did not fire. Officers recovered his loaded but unused Glock under his hip. Johnson was pronounced dead at Fairview Hospital. No officers or civilians were injured. The woman and children were safely removed. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation reviewed the shooting. A Cuyahoga County grand jury returned a no bill in August 2026 and declined to charge Sabeiha. A separate use-of-force review found his actions objectively reasonable given the immediate deadly threat. Elyria Police Chief James Welsh called Sabeiha’s response heroic. Johnson had a 2013 aggravated robbery conviction and was on community control for 2025 felony drug and weapons charges at the time. The video of the entry and shots captures the moment officers say they stopped an armed suspect from using a family as hostages.
