On 18 February 2026, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, alongside Oromia Regional President Shimallis Abdisa, government officials, and project leaders, inaugurated the construction and development work of the site. The project site lies 28 km east of Ayra town and covers approximately eight square kilometers. Residents who spoke to Addis Standard said the insecurity has been exacerbated by the presence and movements of Fano armed groups in the area. Local officials of Kiremu district, confirmed to Addis Standard that more than one thousand people have been displaced in recent incidents linked to armed violence. Displaced residents said most of those uprooted are from the kebeles of Ashu Kutaye, Gudina Jiregna, and Babu in Kiremu district. #Ethiopia: Oromia regional prosecutor killed, three abducted in alleged armed group attack in #East_Wollega An #Oromia regional prosecutor was shot dead and three colleagues abducted yesterday in an alleged attack by “an armed group” in Hara Kebele, Jimma Arjo district, East Wollega Zone, Oromia region, the Oromia Regional State Prosecutors’ Association told Addis Standard. The incident occurred around 3:00 p.m. on 26 November 2024 in Hara Kebele, Jimma Arjo Woreda, East Wollega Zone, Tadesse Nigussie Etana, President of the Oromia Regional State Prosecutors’ Association, said. He explained that five prosecutors, including himself, were traveling from Jimma Town to Nekemte for government work when they were intercepted. According to Tadesse, the group encountered “an armed group moving in the forest,” who shot and killed Prosecutor Negasse Kebede at the scene and abducted three others — Alemayehu Mesele, Addisu Legesse, and Yirgalem Mitiku. Their current whereabouts remain unknown. Tadesse told Addis Standard that Negasse Kebede’s body is being transported to Sululta Town for burial, while the condition of the abducted prosecutors remains unclear. The Oromia Prosecutors’ Bureau separately confirmed Kebede’s death in a social media statement expressing sorrow over the incident. “The Association condemns this act and demands the immediate release of the abducted legal professionals,” Tadesse said.
