Defining Moment #4:
Bryan Reynolds Walk-Off HR vs. Twins on May 29
by @MDFitness1975
Introduction – Savoring the Joys
Let’s face it, passionate Pirate fandom can be exhausting. Too often it feels like being trapped on a never-ending doom coaster filled with gut-punches and rug-pulls, with a few random moments of temporary happiness mixed in. But like any debilitating addiction, it’s impossible for many of us to stop chasing that high.
So when those rare moments of unexpected exhilaration do burst into our souls, we need to cherish ‘em. And for me, there haven’t been too many moments over the past decade that surged a lightning bolt of pure joy into me quite like the Bryan Reynolds walk-off home run on May 29 vs. the Twins did.
Backstory – Friday Night Lights
There has always been something about Friday night games when the Pirates are still in contention that cranks up the anticipation level for me. You wanna win every series obviously, and winning that first game exponentially increases the odds of a series win. But it’s more than that. Weekends make me happy, and waking up Saturday morning after a Pirates win the night before amplifies that happiness. A Friday night win takes the edge off, while a loss sorta puts you in “chase mode” – Saturday’s game becomes a “must-win” if you hope to win the series.
On this particular Friday, the game had an added national visibility being on Apple TV, and the Pirates were coming off back-to-back thumpings by the Cubs to drop to one game over .500 at 29-28.
Being alive and in contention post-Memorial Day felt damn good, but we could all start to feel it slipping away a little.
The Moment – Splits Be Damned
After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning thanks to a Kody Clemens home run off Jared Jones, the Pirates quickly answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own, capped by a Konnor Griffin RBI single to make it 3-1.
Jones couldn’t hold the lead though, and the Twins led 5-3 in the top of the 3rd after a Trevor Larnach 2-run shot.
Oneil Cruz answered with a solo shot in the bottom of the 3rd, and the score remained locked at 5-4 Twins over the next 6 innings of baseball.
Headed to the bottom of the ninth, the Pirates had one last shot to avoid a 3-game losing streak and falling back to .500. Spencer Horwitz, Brandon Lowe and Bryan Reynolds were due up, and given that each hitter had an OPS in the .800s at the time, even the most negative Pirate fans secretly maintained a glimmer of hope.
That hope-glimmer got a little brighter when Horwitz reached base on an infield single to lead off the inning, though Lowe quickly struck out on 3 straight sweepers and that feeling of impending dread immediately rushed back.
Up to the plate strode Reynolds, facing the lefty Taylor Rogers and batting from the right side. Given that about 75% of Reynold’s homers are against right-handed pitchers and he only had one career walk-off home run under his belt, the odds of him sending everyone home happy were stacked against him.
He swung through a 94 MPH sinker to fall behind 0-1 in the count. A fouled-off cutter after a couple balls evened the count at 2-2.
And then it happened.
Reynolds absolutely obliterated a 93 MPH sinker deep into the left field seats for his second career walk-off home run, sending his teammates and the 27,000+ fans in attendance into delirium and a 6-5 Pirates victory.
What I’ll always remember, besides my wife and I jumping off our couch as the ball sailed into the night, was the look of pure joy on Reynold’s face as he rounded the bases and celebrated with his coaches and teammates. Mister Cool, Calm & Collected, the forever stoic, actually beamed a big, beautiful smile for maybe his first time in a Pirates uniform.
What’s Next – Soak It In
I rewound and played back that majestic bomb maybe 5x right after it happened, soaking in that magical bliss of an unexpected win yanked from the clutches of defeat.
I’ve watched it probably 25 more times throughout the season, too.
Did it help the Pirates get to the play-offs? Sadly, it did not. Even though in the moment it helped keep them in the fight.
But it was awesome. And it mattered.
Being a passionate sports fan, especially a Pirates fan, is legitimately exhausting and far too often simply demoralizing.
Which is why we need to savor those moments that bring us flashes of unanticipated joy and relief. Reynolds walk-off homer against the Twins in late May did exactly that.
The hope was that night would be looked back upon as a springboard to finally getting into the play-offs after a decade+ drought.
Sadly and predictably, it was not meant to be.

A standard-issue corporate American work-from-homer, he tries to exercise his mind & body a little bit every day to help alleviate the pain & suffering that 4+ decades of being a watch-every-game Pirates fan entails. His loving family thankfully accepts and supports his affliction, though they do roll their eyes every time he falsely claims he needs to take a break from the Pirates for the sake of his sanity.

JACKSON CHOURIO IS THE WALK-OFF HERO IN GAME 2!
This isn’t the way I would have planned to watch it, but there was no better sight than “In play, run(s)” from watching a lot of the game from this viewpoint and from the UK.
