#Waspoftheweek number 52, and the final one of the year, is none other than the common wasp, Vespula vulgaris. This familiar eusocial species is a generalist predator and lives in colonies which can produce around 10,000 workers! #wasplove #waspwednesday

#Waspoftheweek number 51 is Vespa crabro. Britain's largest wasp, this impressive eusocial species is an effective predator, taking a wide range of prey. Nests are usually constructed aerially, such as in tree cavities, using pulp from decaying wood. #wasplove #waspwednesday

This week's #waspoftheweek is a good one: The bee-wolf, Philanthus triangulum! This large wasp used to be a real rarity but has massively expanded its range over the last 30 years. As the name suggests it hunts honeybees and nests in open, sandy ground. #wasplove #waspwednesday
