Steffi Häberlin will leave SD Worx-Protime at the end of 2026 and join Canyon//SRAM on a two-year deal for 2027 and 2028. The move was announced on 1 October 2026. She is the reigning double Swiss road champion, still only two full seasons into a professional road career that began as a late switch from mountain biking.
The transfer:
Häberlin, 28, was under contract at SD Worx-Protime through the end of 2026. She signed that deal in October 2024, her first WorldTeam contract, covering 2025 and 2026. ProCyclingStats already lists her next team as Canyon//SRAM for 2027–2028, matching Swiss reports of a two-year contract. She will finish the current season in the Dutch squad’s colours. The jersey change is for 2027.
At Canyon//SRAM she joins fellow new Swiss signing Jasmin Liechti, the 2026 elite Swiss time-trial champion, who was announced in July on her own two-year deal. The team has pointed out that, at least at the start of 2027, it will hold both Swiss national titles. Other names already tied to the 2027 project include Antonia Niedermaier, Neve Bradbury, Zoe Bäckstedt and Shirin van Anrooij, who is coming from Lidl-Trek. The signing also lands after Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney’s departure.
Canyon//SRAM is a German WorldTeam team.
The operating company is Lauke Pro Radsport GmbH, based in Leipzig. It was set up by Ronny Lauke, the German general manager, after Velocio–SRAM folded at the end of 2015.
The new squad took over part of that structure and started in 2016 under a German UCI licence. The same company also runs the development team, Canyon//SRAM Generation. UCI records list Lauke as team representative and sports director, with the registered address in Leipzig. The licence nationality is Germany.
Canyon Bicycles is the German bike supplier, founded in Koblenz by Roman Arnold. As of early 2026 the majority shareholder is the Belgian holding company Groupe Bruxelles Lambert, with about 52 percent. Arnold still holds roughly 40 percent and is executive chairman.
SRAM is the American component manufacturer, headquartered in Chicago. It has been the co-title sponsor since the team was formed.
A Polish firm, Zondacrypto, was a third title sponsor for 2025 and early 2026. The team ended that deal in May 2026 and dropped the name.
The roster is international. The registration, the operating company, the base and the general manager are German.
Why Häberlin is leaving SD Worx Protime, in her words:
There is no public falling-out. Häberlin has framed the move as the next step in a career that is still very new.
From the team announcement, via WMN Cycling:
“My first contract was a big change for me because I had only been cycling for four years, and that was mainly as a cross-country mountain-biker. I had been thinking about making the switch to the road for quite some time, but I didn’t really know what to expect or whether it was the right decision for me at that time. Those doubts are long gone now, and I’m really happy to be a road cyclist. I see this next step as a great opportunity to keep learning and developing as a rider, and to gather more race days.” Key portion of statement "to gather more race days."
On the choice of the Canyon//SRAM team:
“Canyon//SRAM is an ambitious team, but at the same time I don’t think that the human side of the sport gets lost. I’ve had the feeling that Canyon//SRAM really tries to support each rider individually, and get the most out of everyone. I also find it commendable that Canyon//SRAM takes responsibility for the next generation through the Generation team.”
The line about more race days is the closest thing to a sporting rationale. Dutch coverage has described her at SD Worx as a useful climbing domestique, especially for Anna van der Breggen at the 2025 Giro d’Italia Women, where she finished 40th overall, 48 minutes down, in a clear support role. Cyclingnews’ transfer analysis reads the move as a bet that she was under-used and still has room to grow; that is interpretation, not something she has said herself.
SD Worx is also rebuilding its GC group for 2027, with Cédrine Kerbaol among the incoming names.
Why Canyon signed her:
Commercial director Jonas Möslein:
“Steffi has already shown an impressive level on the road, despite only making the full transition from mountain biking relatively recently. Her endurance, climbing strength and attacking style make her a very exciting rider that can immediately strengthen our squad, while still continuing to grow… Steffi impressed throughout our conversations with her positive, ambitious and down-to-earth nature.”
He also tied the signing to her off-road background: “a distinctive combination of resilience, technical ability and racing instinct.”
Performance director Dan Fleeman was more specific about the role:
“Steffi is a strong climber with a very good aerobic engine, and the consistent ability to stay competitive when races become long and physically demanding. Her strength is particularly evident on sustained climbs and across terrain that creates a lot of fatigue and attrition. She’ll be an important rider for the team in both stage and harder one-day races — whether supporting our leaders, or when the race suits her, having the opportunity to go for her own result.”
Fleeman added that the project is to improve her positioning and decision-making so she creates more chances for her own results. In short, Canyon wants a climber who can work for Antonia Niedermaier and others, and who can still win or place when the race opens up. Her profile fits hard one-day races and attritional stage races more than pure time trials, though she was second in the 2026 Swiss TT.
Who she Steffi is:
Born 11 December 1997 in Münsterlingen, canton of Thurgau, on the Swiss shore of Lake Constance.
Height 1.64 m.
Turns 29 in December 2026.
Professional road rider only since 2025. Favourite race, listed by SD Worx: the Tour de Suisse. Before joining that team she named Strade Bianche as the race she most wanted to ride.
Studies medicine. She has said she plans to finish in summer 2027 and then commit fully to cycling, because a racing career is finite. She has compared notes with fellow Swiss medical graduates Marlen Reusser and Elise Chabbey; national coach Edi Telser has joked about being surrounded by doctors.
Partner of German cross-country rider Julian Schelb (born 1992, Breisach), a former German marathon champion and 2024 European Championship medallist. He is how she came to the sport.
Describes herself as “sometimes a little bit of a goofball” who can drink a litre of chocolate milk straight. She admires Lorena Wiebes for being able to suffer when it matters and still be “fair, straight-forward and funny.” She rarely misses racing mountain bikes, but still rides one in winter as a change from road training.
Her Life story
She did not grow up as a full-time cyclist. She was a medical student when the pandemic moved lectures online. With more free time she started riding with Schelb. The Canyon announcement dates the start of her cycling to July 2020. Two months later she was Swiss cross-country marathon champion.
German Wikipedia dates her first contact with cross-country to 2016 through Schelb, with racing only from 2020. Her own accounts of the SD Worx signing put the real beginning in the COVID period. Either way, elite competition is recent.
The rise on the mountain bike was fast:
2020: Swiss XCM champion, in her first season.
2021: silver in the marathon at the European Championships, riding for Thömus RN Swiss Bike Team.
2022: Swiss XCM champion again, with Bixs Performance Racing.
2023–24: Team BMC. Third in the Swiss short-track nationals both years. Seventh at the 2023 mountain-bike world championships. Solid World Cup results, including a top-10 in Canada in 2024, without becoming a regular XCO podium rider.
Road racing sat alongside that. She was fifth at the Swiss road nationals as early as 2020. With the national team she rode the Tour de Suisse Women in 2022 (18th overall) and 2024 (22nd), plus the Tour de Romandie Féminin. The moment that changed her career was stage 4 of the 2024 Tour de Suisse Women: she missed the move one day, made the decisive break the next, and finished fifth. SD Worx sports manager Danny Stam noticed. In October 2024 the team signed her for two years.
Stam at the time: she had barely any road history, raced offensively, “with a lion’s heart,” and had shown she could stay with the best on long climbs. Häberlin said the meeting with Stam made the choice obvious, because she would be around some of the best riders in the world and still have room to find her role. SD Worx also left the door open for the odd mountain-bike start. The focus, though, was the road.
Palmarès
Road:
2025: Swiss road champion, beating Elise Chabbey by about a second. Fourth in the Swiss time trial. Fifth overall at the Tour de Romandie Féminin, with two top-five stage finishes. Eighth at Festival Elsy Jacobs in Garnich. Giro d’Italia Women debut, 40th overall, riding for van der Breggen.
2026: Swiss road champion again, at Courtételle, dropping Marlen Reusser in the final kilometre after the two had marked each other over the last climb. Second in the Swiss time trial. Sixth overall at the Tour de Suisse Women, in the champion’s jersey, with a stage podium. Eighth overall at the UAE Tour Women, and winner of the points classification there. Second at Festival Elsy Jacobs in Luxembourg, her first UCI podium outside the nationals. Mountains jersey at the Tour de Suisse Women. On 17 September, first professional win away from the nationals: the Tour de Gatineau (UCI 1.1, 121 km), sprinting clear of a late 11-rider break ahead of Georgia Baker and Ava Holmgren. Six days later, 13th in the elite women’s road race at the World Championships in Montréal.
ProCyclingStats rates her as a climber and hilly-race rider rather than a time-trialist. Her 2026 points total put her roughly inside the top 50 of the women’s ranking, up from outside the top 100 in 2025.
Mountain bike:
Swiss marathon champion in 2020 and 2022.
European marathon silver in 2021.
Swiss short-track bronze in 2023 and 2024.
Seventh at the 2023 world championships.
Teams: Thömus (2021), Bixs Performance Racing (2022), BMC (2023–24).
Other early road wins include the 2024 hill climb Silenen–Amsteg–Bristen and the Leo Wirth memorial race.
How the two seasons at SD Worx read:
Year one was the breakthrough: a national title and a fifth place in Romandie, from a rider who had been a full-time mountain biker the season before. Year two was the consolidation: she defended the jersey against Reusser, placed in WorldTour stage races, took a first international podium, then won in Quebec and finished 13th at the Worlds.
The Giro remained a domestique job. That mix — results of her own, plus work for a leader — is exactly the brief Canyon has written for her.
The wider Swiss context matters.
Reusser left SD Worx for Movistar after 2024. Häberlin’s 2026 title win over Reusser, and her pairing at Canyon with Liechti, means the next Swiss national-team leadership group will be split across squads rather than concentrated in one Dutch team.
