'Yr Afallennau' (The Apple Trees) is a medieval Welsh poem, in which Myrddin Wyllt, the character who would later evolve into the wizard Merlin, sits amongst the trees of an apple orchard while prophesying the victories of the Welsh over the English.
"They will be slaughtered by our ashen spears", the poem claims, "and their heads used for footballs".
Quite the image, and a bloody contrast to the opening line of the poem, "Sweet apple tree, your branches delight me"!

The Tiddy Mun is one of Lincolnshire's most distinctive folkloric figures, a tiny marsh spirit said to dwell among the reeds, mists and waterways of the Carrs and Fens. According to tradition, the Tiddy Mun protected the wetlands and their delicate balance. When the marshes were drained in the seventeenth century, the spirit's cries were said to foretell illness and misfortune until people gathered at the new moon to offer water and ask forgiveness ~
More than a tale of a supernatural being, the legend reflects an enduring respect for the natural world and the belief that changing the landscape comes at a cost. Today, the Tiddy Mun remains one of the most evocative guardians of Lincolnshire folklore ~
