This week I’ve found black blister beetles and wheat stem sawfly in my canola sweeps. Also diamondback, black flea beetles and cabbage seed pod weevil.

Outside the lab entrance - a Velvet-striped grasshopper, walking and jumping on 5 C concrete, feeling the apricity. Unusual for Nov 19 in western Canada. It is a fifth instar (immature stage), not a fourth, because of warmth in Sept to Nov.

It is +2C, about to snow, so I cut some Dahlia flowers to put on the cafeteria table at the lab. One has a lacewing larva busy searching for aphids to kill.

Syrphid larvae eat aphids on my flowers, competing with lacewing larvae and pasitoid wasps. Adult syrphids are pollinators, until killed by fungus (Entomophthora muscae). Correction: this is White-bowed Smoothwing (Scaeva affinis), ID by Trina Roberts.

It was 28 C on Oct 9, unusual for prairie Canada. With the heat this late in October, the pollinators have switched from bees, wasps, and flower flies to moths (mainly alfalfa looper, like this one) and hover flies.
