#Access_Now and the Centre for Advancement of Rights and Democracy (#CARD) are condemning the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) for exposing individuals' personal information without consent. This breach of data protection laws and privacy rights has sparked outrage among privacy advocacy groups.
The bank's disclosure of a "system glitch" that led to unauthorized fund withdrawals has resulted in public shaming of individuals, violating their constitutional right to privacy, according to rights groups. While CBE claims to have recovered over 98% of the misappropriated funds, concerns remain over its handling of customers' private data.
Access Now and CARD demand “the immediate removal of the published data and an end to the public shaming campaign.” They insist that CBE must comply with Ethiopia's Personal Data Protection Law and respect individuals' privacy rights.
