Leaving #CongreSSH and #ACCUTE2018 thinking about #VictorianGardens: what objects Victorians put in their conservatories (@LindsayFWells19) and how they might conflate gardens and graveyards (@emjanerothwell).
Thanks, @ACCUTEnglish and @UofRegina for an awesome conference.
You may be interested to hear that I only heard the word “postmodern” once at the #ACCUTE2018 conference. Once. And it was spoken in a dismissive manner—almost scoffing. English scholars have had it with the critical theory of the last century. (Also no one mentioned Marx at all)
@MatthewJBondy It's the most happening. Day Four of #ACCUTE2018 today after a very successful dance party last night. @ACCUTEnglish
I would like to apologize in advance for how many times I will say text, book, & work in my paper today #ACCUTE2018
This year’s winner of the Graduate Student Essay is L. Camille van der Marel (U of Alberta), for her presentation, “Diasporic Citizens, Treaty Citizenship: Decolonizing the Individual in Transnational Literary Critique”!! #Congressh2018 #ACCUTE2018
Re: Canada Reads. The program sees itself as serving & generating a literary citizenry in Canada ... but it’s unclear whether it reflects the public sphere (e.g., social media)—Jeremy Haynes #ACCUTE2018
Re: institutionalized cultural appropriation in CanLit. A question to white people (e.g., the settler who’s writing this tweet): is this an intellectual exercise for you, or do you go home at night & get stomach aches?—Richard Douglass-Chin #ACCUTE2018
Margaret Atwood’s more concerned about what her American audience thinks about #metoo than what her Canadian audience makes of #CanLitAccountable. This must be because her most significant fanbase is South of the border—@rak_dr #ACCUTE2018
@JazzlamHazzlam Thanks for great discussion and ideas for refreshing the Best Practices Checklist for Contract Academic Faculty. #ACCUTE2018
Laura Moss: CanLit Guides were supported by a @SSHRC_CRSH workshop grant and the journal @canadianlit. Important note: there is no @SSHRC_CRSH funding for this kind of open access pedagogical material. Guides won’t continue without this kind of funding. #ACCUTE2018
Re: @canadianlit guides. These resources make research manageable by translating it for students. They make space for students’ exploration—@ShelleyBoyd3 #ACCUTE2018
Re: @canadianlit guides. These guides are double voiced: written for teachers and undergraduate students simultaneously. They attempt to balance instruction for undergraduates (& preparation for graduate schools) while developing pedagogical practice—@carl_a_watts #ACCUTE2018
Gillian Roberts: On how CanLit is taught in other countries, with degree structures, cultural contexts, & historical knowledges, different than what we assume in Canadian #highered. When we write public scholarship/pedagogy in Canada, these are our audiences, too. #ACCUTE2018
Re @canadianlit guides. I use my “teaching voice” in my CanLit guide. And my students will hear some similarities. I write the guide the way I teach. I give prompts for discussion that asks students to come to their own answers—Farah Moosa #ACCUTE2018
Nadine Fladd: Employed in a writing centre, work on and research for the CanLit Guides is outside the job. Scheduling a retreat-style meeting for writing and revision, with travel support, was crucial. Also learned revision techniques for her writing centre work. #ACCUTE2018
Re: @canadianlit guides. This is a profession that exists primarily to teach, but the labour of writing teaching resources is not labour that our profession valourizes — @brennacgray #ACCUTE2018
Re: teaching CanLit 1950-present. “I teach the debates in CanLit—e.g., UBC accountable, appropriation prize, Joseph Boyden, the dumpster fire—to equip students to both critique & recognize the limits of those debates themselves” Stephanie Oliver #ACCUTE2018
“Even the term CanLit needs revision. To call it that wraps it up in nationalist & colonial terms. It is settler literature” Michelle Coupal #ACCUTE2018
“Like Indigenous people, Indigenous literatures need to be self-determining & and stand on their own territory. ... CanLit is irreconcilably settled on the literature by Indigenous people” Michelle Coupal #ACCUTE2018
“I feel an extraordinarily large responsibility when teaching CanLit. ... CanLit is always changing” Laura Moss #ACCUTE2018
