Today marked an exciting achievement as we celebrated the graduation of the second cohort of the #AgriSolarAcceleratorProgram, which was tailored to empower innovators in developing valuable financing solutions to accelerate business growth across the Agri-solar value chain while fostering inclusive business models. The program's primary goal was to equip entrepreneurs with a thorough understanding of how solar technologies are adopted and utilized within Uganda's horticulture, aquaculture, and dairy value chains. Speaking at the event, Jude Kigozi, CEO of @luksolar, shared that the program provided a platform to attract new partnerships for distributing refrigerators to farmers in the dairy, horticulture, and aquaculture value chain, revamp their business strategy to attract niche customers and financial partners, and pivot venture models to better serve last-mile communities. @PaddyNsubuga , Project Manager at Mushana E-SACCO, said, “The program provided us with a platform to develop clear financial plans for aquaculture farmers, including strategies for building solid credit scores and offering flexible plans. Through collaborations with participants like Samaki Care Ltd, they established connections with farmers in their database, enhancing more business opportunities. Solomon Victor Kutesa from ODLN SACCO highlighted that the program helped refine our business model, particularly in onboarding new AgriSolar equipment such as solar irrigation pumps, pipes, and refrigerators. This refinement, coupled with asset financing, has made it easier for them to lend to farmers in the maize and coffee value chains, contributing to sustainable growth and impact in the sector. Given the pressing need for innovation in the face of climate change, it is imperative that we purposefully support the adoption and use of solar technology. This involves maximizing opportunities in both the demand and supply chain to streamline the development, deployment, financing, sale, maintenance, and other aspects of incorporating solar technologies for smallholder farmers. Yesterday, we engaged with over 150 farmers from Nkonkonjeru Area Enterprise cooperative and Solar Innovators in Mityana as part of our #AgrisolarAcceleratorProgram. The engagement focused on deepening innovators' understanding of real challenges in farmers adopting solar technology, fostering collaboration opportunities for customized solutions, allowing innovators to refine technologies based on direct user feedback, and implementing a follow-up plan for ongoing communication. While solar innovation is consistently pitched as a solution to challenges in the agriculture sector, farmers continue to demonstrate a substantial lack of awareness and utilization of existing innovative solutions, even when these solutions could significantly enhance their agricultural processes. Therefore, this engagement sought to facilitate direct interaction between solar technology innovators and farmers in Mityana. By bringing these stakeholders together, we aim to bridge the information gap between technology solutions and on-the-ground agricultural needs, fostering collaboration and innovation in the integration of solar technologies into farming practices.
