I’m clearly in the minority here, but for both Long COVID and ME/CFS, I think it is a serious mistake to insist that infections cannot potentially persist in some form, resist clearance, and continue to drive disease. We can debate the evidence, mechanisms, and funding allocation percentages. But taking persistence off the table altogether has always been, and remains, completely unreasonable from my perspective. And persistence doesn’t have to be lifelong to matter. Even if a pathogen persists 'only' for months or years and is eventually cleared, we need to understand why clearance takes longer in some patients, what happens during that time, and why some recover while others remain chronically ill.

As a physician, I’ve seen it countless times: Cancer never asked who you voted for. Diabetes doesn’t care if you’re red or blue. Parkinson’s is blind to your voter registration. And a rare genetic disease doesn’t check a child’s parents’ party affiliation before striking. We are united by our health — & by our shared quest to achieve and maintain excellent health. Politics has its rightful place in taxation, foreign policy, immigration, & many other areas. But our health must remain above politics and political influence. We are all on the same team. Let’s work together, recognizing we all share the same goal: getting every American the best possible care.
