#Amphipolis was one of ancient Greece’s most important cities, controlling trade along the Strymon River and playing a key role in military & political history. The Lion of Amphipolis stands as a monumental symbol of the city’s power, wealth & strategic importance. 🇬🇷

Saw today the unique 3rd /4th c. late antique/late Roman mosaic at #Amphipolis representing the rape of Hylas by the nymphs next to a panel with Poseidon saving Amymone. What building would house these two, it didn’t seem like a house… Past #mosaicmonday

#FrescoFriday; from a visit a couple weeks ago to #Amphipolis, the painted walls of a room in the Hellenistic House, a residence near the acropolis dated to the 2nd century BCE.

Did You Know ?
Greek | Macedon | Amphipolis [ ΑΜΦΙΠΟΛΙΣ ]
Η αρχική της ονομασία ήταν «Εννέα οδοί».
Amphipolis derived its name, which means Surrounded City, from the fact that the Strymon River flows almost entirely around the site of the city.
Amphipolis was strategically located on the site of an old Thracian settlement known to the Greeks as Ennea Hodoi [Nine Ways] because nine roads converged there.
The Athenians attempted to colonize Ennea Hodoi in 466 BC, but were fiercely resisted by the local Edonean Thracians. At last, in 437 BC, the Athenians triumphed and took Ennea Hodoi as their own, refounding the Thracian settlement as the Greek city of Amphipolis.

The same form (hydria) but two very different treatments.
The #polychrome battle with the Amazons is amazing but the restraint of the other hydria is just as beautiful.
Both ultimately used as cinerary urns and now on display in the Museum of #Amphipolis, #Greece. Late 4thC BC
