Paris has changed a lot since the 1800s, but some landmarks still hold the city together. The Arc de Triomphe was completed in 1836, long before the wide boulevards around it became the Paris we recognize today. Much of that transformation came under Baron Haussmann in the mid 19th century, when medieval streets were cleared and replaced with the grand avenues Paris is known for. When you compare old photos with today’s streets, it’s easy to see why people are amazed by the scale and precision. But the real story is just as interesting without adding mystery to it.
