Young pianists from Haute école de musique de Genève - Neuchâtel (HEM) will be playing pieces from inspirational composers, with stunning scientific films of subatomic particles, the solar system and the Universe as a background, produced by Emmy-nominated astronomer and filmmaker José Francisco Salgado.
This event will be co-created by CERN, the HEM and KV 265, a non-profit organisation whose mission is the communication of science through music and the visual arts.

#ThrowbackThurdsday to June 1980 🏃♂️
That summer, Leon Van Hove (CERN’s Director General at that time) kicked off the traditional annual relay race, a tradition that still takes place to this day #AtCERN.
Twice Director of the Theory Division, Leon Van Hove oversaw the official unification of the two sites of the Laboratory – Prévessin and Meyrin – and led the early groundwork for what would become the Large Electron-Positron Collider (LEP), the largest electron-positron accelerator ever built.
Summer students #AtCERN 💻
Today’s #PhotoOfTheWeek features a lecture given by CERN’s Director General Fabiola Gianotti to the 2025 class of summer students in the audience.
The CERN Summer Student Programme offers STEM students pursuing bachelor’s or master’s degrees the unique opportunity to join in the day-to-day work of CERN’s experiments and attend lectures specially prepared for them by scientists from around the world.

Here we see the first large units of the magnetic shielding designed for the European hydrogen bubble chamber, arriving #AtCERN from the ‘Forges et Ateliers de la Loire’ (France).
The European hydrogen bubble chamber, also known as the Big European Bubble Chamber (BEBC), was a large particle detector that was used in particle physics research from 1973 until 1984.
The first images feature the first unit, a lower disc weighing 48 tons. Swipe to the last picture to see BEBC finalised. 👉

This #PhotoOfTheWeek brings you to the Hardronic Music Festival, which took place #AtCERN earlier this month. The Hardronic Music Festival was created in 1989 by Silvano de Gennaro and has been taking place for the last three decades.

Here we see physicist John Bell, known for his theorem on the foundations of quantum mechanics – which he worked on #AtCERN – laying the groundwork for the now-vibrant field of quantum information.

Beyond accelerating particles and exploring the mysteries of our Universe, CERN also offers an active social programme.
Ready, set, #Bike2Work 🚲
This #PhotoOfTheWeek features a festive group bike ride organised #AtCERN to celebrate the end of the #Bike2Work challenge.
Between May and June 2025, a total of 11,156 people took part in this year’s challenge, forming 320 teams.
CERN and more than 40 local entities, including Geneva municipalities, public organisations, and other international institutions took part in this challenge.

Here we see the Linear Accelerator 4 (Linac 4), one of CERN’s accelerators.
#DidYouKnow: some accelerators #AtCERN, such as Linac 4, are learning to operate autonomously thanks to artificial intelligence. This "auto-pilot" mode will be essential for the #HiLumiLHC, which will require a more powerful and intelligent control system.
In the coming years, AI could help improve particle accelerators’ efficiency and reduce their energy consumption.

Submissions are in for the CERN Photowalk 2025 📸
Today’s #PhotoOfTheWeek highlights the Laboratory through the lenses of photographers.
On 27 May, during the “CERN Photowalk 2025: Future Colliders” competition, 17 photographers explored four unique spaces #AtCERN, including the facilities of the #HiLumiLHC and some of the technologies needed for the future machines. #PhysPics25

High-Energy Accelerators for Radiation Testing and Shielding (HEARTS) is an #EU-funded project that aims to provide two new radiation testing facilities for space applications, one at #CERN and one at GSI in Germany, to increase Europe’s autonomy on critical radiation-testing infrastructures and advance human space exploration.

In honor of #WorldQuantumDay, CERN brought together experts in quantum science to explain its representation in superhero comics.
Here we see the @ATLASexperiment Inner Tracker (ITk) Pixel Module assembly #AtCERN.
The ITk is a completely new, state-of-the-art detector that will replace the current innermost layer of ATLAS. Composed of ultra-precise silicon sensors, it will track electrically-charged particles by detecting the small signals they leave behind.

Did you know that a Telescope Project Division was based #AtCERN?
Today we #ThrowbackThursday to August 1973. Here we see the control system that was to be fitted to the 1m photometric @ESO telescope. It was believed to be the most advanced built at that time.
In the 1970s, CERN’s collaboration with ESO extended to building a 3.6m telescope, completed by 1976. It was used in more recent times, for the search for extrasolar planets with the HARPS spectrometer – the world’s foremost hunter of planets beyond the solar system.
