(Although hedging has several connotations, i will explain in context of currency risk alone)
Currency hedging is a risk-management strategy used by businesses, investors, and financial institutions to lock in exchange rates and protect themselves against financial losses caused by the depreciation of a foreign or domestic currency.
How Currency Hedging Works During Depreciation:
When a currency depreciates, its purchasing power relative to another currency drops. This creates distinct financial risks depending on your exposure:
For Importers & Debtors (Weakening Local Currency): If your local currency depreciates, buying foreign goods or repaying debt denominated in foreign currency (e.g., US Dollars) becomes significantly more expensive.
For Overseas Investors (Weakening Foreign Currency): If you hold international assets and that foreign currency depreciates, converting those investment returns back into your home currency yields less value.
Hedging works by taking an offsetting financial position in the foreign exchange (FX) market. If your primary position loses value due to currency depreciation, the hedge position gains value, offsetting the loss.
Common Instruments Used to Hedge Currency Risk:
Forward Contracts: A customized agreement between two parties to buy or sell a specific currency at a predetermined exchange rate (the forward rate) on a specified future date. This locks in the rate regardless of market fluctuations.
Futures Contracts: Standardized, exchange-traded agreements similar to forwards that lock in a future exchange rate.
Currency Options: Contracts that give the buyer the right, but not the obligation, to exchange currency at a specific rate before or on an expiration date. Example: Buying a Put option allows you to sell a currency at a guaranteed rate if it depreciates below a certain level, while keeping upside potential if it appreciates.
Currency Swaps: Agreements between two parties to exchange principal and interest payments in different currencies over a set period, commonly used by corporations managing long-term international debt.
Primary Purposes of Currency Hedging:
1. Cash Flow & Profit Margin Protection: Companies operating globally can fix their exchange rates to prevent sudden currency movements from eroding profit margins on international sales or supply contracts.
2. Budgeting & Cash Flow Predictability: Hedging eliminates exchange-rate volatility, allowing corporate finance teams to accurately forecast future cash flows, expenses, and revenues.
3. Preservation of Investment Returns: Global investors hedge currency exposure to ensure that performance gains in foreign equities or bonds are not wiped out when converted back to their base currency.
4. Mitigation of Foreign Debt Exposure: Entities with loans in foreign currencies hedge to lock in repayment costs, avoiding sudden surges in debt servicing costs if their local currency depreciates.

#G for Gini coefficient!!
#AtoZ of Economics
The Gini coefficient (or Gini index) is a statistical measure used to quantify economic inequality within a population, typically measuring income or wealth distribution. Developed by Italian statistician Corrado Gini in 1912, it ranges from 0 to 1 (or 0% to 100%):
0 (0%) = Perfect Equality: Everyone in the population earns the exact same income.
1 (100%) = Perfect Inequality: A single person holds all the income/wealth, while everyone else earns zero.
Gini Coefficient and The Lorenz Curve:
The coefficient is derived graphically from the Lorenz Curve, which plots the cumulative percentage of total income earned against the cumulative percentage of the population.
Line of Equality: A straight 45-degree diagonal line representing perfect equality (e.g., 20% of the population earns 20% of the income).
Lorenz Curve: The actual curved line showing real income distribution.
Calculation:
Area A: The gap between the Line of Equality and the Lorenz Curve.
Area B: The space under the Lorenz Curve.
As inequality grows, the curve bows further away, expanding Area A and raising the Gini score.
Key Applications & Benchmarks:
Under 0.30 (Low Inequality): Typical for Nordic nations (e.g., Slovakia, Slovenia, Denmark) with strong social safety nets.
0.30 to 0.40 (Moderate Inequality): Common in high-income, developed economies (e.g., UK, France, Japan) and several middle-income nations.
0.40 to 0.50 (High Inequality): Found in countries with noticeable structural wealth gaps (e.g., US, Brazil, India).
Above 0.50 (Severe Inequality): Seen in economies with extreme concentration of wealth (e.g., South Africa).
Limitations:
Ignores Absolute Wealth: A poor country and a rich country can share the exact same Gini index if their internal income disparities are proportional.
Demographic Sensitivity: Changes in household structure (such as an aging population or increase in single-person homes) can alter the score without a true change in underlying economic policy.
Underreports Top Income: Standard household surveys often struggle to fully capture high-net-worth individuals and offshore wealth.
