Arakkha Sangha Condemns Monastery Bombing as an Attack on Buddhism AB News – April 24, 2026 The Arakkha Sangha Welfare Association has strongly condemned the military junta’s airstrike on monasteries in Mrauk-U Township, Arakkha State, calling it an act of terrorism against Buddhism after a monk was killed and religious buildings were destroyed. According to the statement released today, the junta carried out two airstrikes using 500-pound bombs by jet fighter on April 19 against Kyauk Se Pyin Village in Mrauk-U Township. As a result of the attack, the village monastery and an ancient ordination hall were burned to ashes. A total of 13 people, including three monks, were seriously injured. Among the injured monks, one later passed away while receiving medical treatment for severe injuries, according to the Sangha Welfare Association. The association stated that the attack was not only inhumane but also a blatant violation of religious freedom and international human rights standards. It described the bombing of monasteries and the destruction of Buddhist religious structures as a direct act of violence against the Buddhist faith and the monastic community. The group demanded an immediate halt to such attacks and called for the protection of religious buildings and sacred sites. It also urged the international community and neighboring countries to ensure justice and accountability for what it described as war crimes committed against civilians and religious institutions. The statement further emphasized that violence against Buddhism and religious institutions can never be accepted under any circumstances, and that the entire Arakkha Sangha community strongly opposes such actions.
