Interested in black holes? Lots of interesting talks in @PeterDEdmonds' #BHinit thread! (Wish I were there) https://t.co/Gu2ivRBevz
I'm here at the 1-day workshop for the opening of the Black Hole Initiative, at Harvard. I'm surrounded by many black hole experts. #BHinit
Natarajan: One possible solution is starting with very massive BH seeds. Then growth doesn't have to be so fast. #BHinit
Natarajan: A key problem is explaining how some SMBHs grew so massive so quickly in early universe. A kind of timing crunch. #BHinit
Ghez: Better precision in stellar orbits can probe dark matter & test GR in a new regime. 1 star will pass v.close to SMBH in 2018. #BHinit
Blandford argues that near-term observational discovery space in this area is very large, i.e. stay tuned. #BHinit
Last session of the Black Hole Initiative workshop is on black hole astrophysics - much more my cup of tea than theory. #BHinit
Hertog: Title of his paper is more interesting: "One Bubble to Rule Them All" https://t.co/PfKdV4f5PJ #BHinit
Turok mentions a paper wondering whether primordial BHs might be the dark matter: https://t.co/9QZ3GK79wb #BHinit
Next is Malcolm Perry on the "Black hole information paradox". He's giving a blackboard talk, rather than typical powerpoint. #BHinit
Stephen Hawking at the Black Hole Initiative workshop, with Avi Loeb in foreground, Tony Beasley in back.#BHinit
Kalogera: Binary BHs could form from isolated binaries or in dense star clusters, like globular clusters or galactic centers. #BHinit
Kalogera: This conclusion comes from high mass of system: lower metallicity means progenitor stars lose less mass before collapse #BHinit
Kalogera: Progenitor of GW event likely came from low metallicity (low amounts of elements heavier than helium) environment. #BHinit
Kalogera: mentions the binary BH merger rate. Still very uncertain, a range of 2 orders of magnitude, but still, they have a number #BHinit
Kalogera: mentions the possible link of a Fermi gamma-ray burst 0.4s after GW event. This claim is still being looked at. #BHinit
Kalogera: discussing the distance & localization of GW150914.The latter will get much better in the future with more detectors. #BHinit
Here's Vicky Kalogera starting her talk. #BHinit
Keep an eye on @PeterDEdmonds TL; he's tweeting from opening workshop of Harvard's Black Hole Initiative. #BHInit https://t.co/1QmZRUdbEZ

Next up is (former Center for Astrophysics scientist) Vicky Kalogera: "Astrophysics of Binary Black Holes" #BHinit
Buonanno asks whether they can prove GW150914's remnant is a BH. Short answer is no (but note, "prove" is a very high standard) #BHinit
