This winter, we ringed 44 Black Redstarts and resighted/retrapped 14 from previous winters. Just a casual winter monitoring project in Brno, but one that is truly close to my heart! ❤️The aim is to study survival, within-winter movements & where the birds breed. | #BrnoRedstart
📢Great news from @birdlifecz! #BlackRedstart will be the Bird of the Year 2024! 🐦 We are proud that our #BrnoRedstart project inspired a national winter survey. Join the winter challenge and make 2024 the year of discovery!🌨️

Exciting times ahead as we kick off the next #BlackRedstart field season in Brno! Wondering how many survivors we’ll encounter and how many new ones we’ll mark? Join us in exploring the winter magic of Brno through the eyes of these beautiful birds | #BrnoRedstart
This year’s project dedicated to wintering Black Redstarts in Brno is over. 45 Black Redstart were newly marked and 10 birds from previous winters were resighted. We look forward to spring sightings, as we would love to know where these birds breed! 🙏 #birdringing #BrnoRedstart
Time flies and here we go again! The wintering season of #BlackRedstarts has started. How many birds ringed last winter survived and where exactly will they winter? Pay attention to them and try to take a picture if you see one with a colour ring!🙏| #birdringing #BrnoRedstart
This winter a total of 30 #BlackRedstarts were newly ringed in #Brno. Three additional from the previous winter were resighted. If you see a Black Redstart with a colour ring, please take a picture and let us know! 🙏 It may help us find their breeding origin 😎 | #BrnoRedstart
It’s sad to witness the demolition of the perfect paradise for wintering #BlackRedstarts near the city centre of #Brno. The buildings at Malá Amerika were richly covered with Japanese Creeper providing a bonanza of berries – an important winter food supply. | #BrnoRedstart
Brownfields are peculiar places. Their many man-made structures, however, provide a welcome shelter for wintering #BlackRedstarts. Today two more were marked with colour rings at one of the #Brno heating plants! 😎 | #birdringing #BrnoRedstart
Once the harshest prison in the Austrian Empire, #Špilberk castle is currently a safe haven for #BlackRedstarts wintering in Brno! 🤩 Tomorrow we plan to colour-ring some more unmarked individuals. Wish us good luck! 🤞 | top right photo: Marek Brabec | #birdringing #BrnoRedstart
This morning saw us catch 3 new wintering #BlackRedstarts and resight 1 ringed in Dec 2020. #Petrov hill in #Brno is a challenging place for netting! Fortunately, we could borrow the keys of the Capuchin Gardens where we could safely set our mist nets😎 #birdringing #BrnoRedstart
