October 3, 42 BC. Philippi, in northern Greece. Two years after the Ides of March, Caesar's assassins finally face his avengers.
On one side were Brutus and Cassius, the men who led the plot to kill Julius Caesar. On the other were Mark Antony and Caesar's young heir, Octavian. Nearly 200,000 Roman soldiers were on the field, all of them fighting each other.
It turned into two separate battles at once.
On one wing, Brutus's men smashed straight into Octavian's lines and overran his camp. Octavian wasn't even there. He was sick, and by his own later account a friend's dream had warned him to leave. Some ancient writers said he spent the fight hiding in a marsh.
On the other wing, Antony stormed Cassius's camp and routed his troops.
Cassius retreated to a hill and saw horsemen riding toward him. His eyesight was poor, and he couldn't tell whose they were. He sent his friend Titinius to find out. When Cassius saw Titinius surrounded by the riders and heard them shouting, he assumed his friend had been captured and that Brutus had been beaten too.
So he went into his tent and had his freedman kill him.
The riders were Brutus's men. They were cheering because they had just won. Plutarch says it happened on Cassius's birthday.
Brutus lost the second battle three weeks later and killed himself too. With both of them gone, the Republic's last defenders were dead, and the road was open for Octavian to become Augustus, the first emperor of Rome.

I believe #Sulla once said, "No friend ever served me, and no enemy ever wronged me, whom I have not repaid in full." Quite the statement & one worth considering, especially in an era of relative chaos.
Sulla preceded #Caesar, but his battles with #Marius were legendary & were key moments in the path to the decay of #Rome's republican institutions.
#History
I urge you to read and learn more about one of the greatest Romans to ever live: Lucius Cornelius Sulla.
Sulla is one of the best men to study, in this world of chaos.

I generally agree with @IMPERATORAUS. The only small caveat is that it was ultimately #Augustus, rather than Julius #Caesar that stabilized #Rome.
That said, figures like Caesar & #Napoleon do emerge at the end of eras of institutional decay.
To conclude, #Toynbee was right to say "Civilizations die by suicide, not murder."
#Civilization
When republican or democratic institutions grow weak, corrupt, and incapable of maintaining order or pursuing the common good, the forces of history tend to produce a Caesar.
Julius Caesar did not destroy the Roman Republic. In reality, he emerged from the aftermath of civil wars, after generations of elite factionalism, the widespread abandonment of traditional Roman virtues, widening socio-economic inequality, and a Senate that could no longer govern effectively.
The Roman people, exhausted by chaos and political stagnation, increasingly turned toward a single strong figure who could act decisively and bring order out of chaos.
Similarly, Napoleon Bonaparte did not seize power in France by himself. Like Julius Caesar, he emerged in the aftermath of the French Revolution, after years of radical upheaval, the Reign of Terror, economic collapse, and a corrupt, ineffective Directory that could no longer maintain internal order or defend the nation from foreign powers.
The French people, exhausted by revolutionary fervour, factional violence, and governmental paralysis, increasingly turned toward a decisive military commander who could impose stability and order.
We are watching similar pressures build in the 21st century.
The erosion of moral and civic virtue, cultural fragmentation, and the detachment of elites from the common good are creating the conditions in which strong, charismatic leadership becomes not only attractive but almost inevitable.

#Vercingetorix, a leader of the #Celtic #Gauls, surrendered to the #Roman forces of #JuliusCaesar on #ThisDayInHistory in 52 BCE, ending the siege & #BattleOfAlesia. #Caesar's #genocidal conquest of what eventually became France was lionized in his propaganda work #TheGallicWar.
