As I contemplate the special opportunity I had to dedicate the Casper Wyoming Temple, my heart and my mind are directed towards the unusual role that this region played in the emigration of the Latter-day Saints from Nauvoo to the Salt Lake Valley. Between 1847 and 1868 more than 60,000 Latter-day Saints passed through Wyoming on their overland trek to the Salt Lake Valley. Most of the Saints made it across the region without incident except for the handcart company tragedies of 1856, involving companies led by James G. Willie and Edward Martin. My great-grandfather, David Patten Kimball, was one of the young men who rescued and carried many of the desperate Saints across the Sweetwater River. President Brigham Young had told the young men to rescue the Saints even if it cost them their own lives. My grandfather, Crozier Kimball, explained to me that one of the reasons these young men were heroic was because they were following the prophet. He taught me that following the counsel of the prophet in our own day would be equally heroic. Today, our living prophet, President Russell M. Nelson, reminds us that “the blessings of the temple help to gather Israel on both sides of the veil. These blessings also help to prepare a people who will help prepare the world for the Second Coming of the Lord!” (general conference, Oct. 2024) There are great promises and blessings for all those who engage in the sacred work in the house of the Lord.
