From 1950 to 2000, France recorded just 30 days over 40°C. In 2026, it’s already recorded over 110.
The French national meteorological service, Météo-France, has released striking new data that underscores the rapid acceleration of global warming.
In 2026 alone, the agency registered a staggering 114 separate instances where temperatures reached or exceeded 40°C (104°F) across its primary network of 120 weather stations. To put this into perspective, during the entire fifty-year period between 1950 and 2000, this extreme 40°C threshold was triggered only 30 times across the same network.
This massive surge reveals that what was once an ultra-rare, generational heat event in Western Europe has now become an alarmingly frequent summer norm.
This drastic shift is reshaping how scientists and policymakers view climate resilience. The summer of 2026 has officially been recorded as France's hottest since measurements began in 1900, bringing prolonged droughts and record-breaking wildfires alongside these relentless heatwaves.
As these extreme weather milestones continue to shatter previous records, experts emphasize the urgent need for robust infrastructure adaptation and mitigation strategies. The staggering contrast in data from Météo-France serves as a wake-up call, showing that the realities of climate change are manifesting far more quickly and intensely than previously projected.

New worm-like #groundwater #fish #species discovered in #India based on a #TikTok video.
#Biodiversityresearch is a crucial component of #climateresearch. We need to understand our #biodiversity as thoroughly as possible to accurately assess the impacts of human-induced #globalwarming. Furthermore, we can only protect our environment if we understand it.
Yet, there are #habitats that are so difficult to access that conducting species surveys there is a laborious task. The deep sea is one example; #groundwaterchannels are another.
This makes the discovery of a new fish species, adapted to life in darkness, all the more impressive:
#Gangaichthys #indonepalicus. The authors, A. Khandekar et al. (2026), became aware of this largely #blind, partially #ribless, #earthwormlike fish in a rather unusual form of #citizenscience: namely via a video on the #socialmedia platform TikTok. A subsequent targeted search for the species in the alluvial aquifers of the #GangesBasin and the #IndoGangeticPlain proved successful, yielding three specimens. Through #morphological and #genomic studies, the species was identified as new and assigned to the family #Chaudhuriidae. The researchers also established a #newgenus for the species.
The attached images show the morphological characteristics of the #holotype as well as the #discoverysite.
