May 1945 - marked one of the most surreal turning points of the 20th Century. After nearly six years of global war, Allied troops began receiving confirmation that Adolf Hitler was dead, ending the leadership of Nazi Germany and signaling the collapse of the Third Reich. For many soldiers, the moment wasn’t celebrated with grand ceremonies, it was processed quietly, often through newspapers and radio reports while still stationed far from home. Hitler died on April 30, 1945, in his bunker beneath Berlin as Soviet forces closed in on the city. Within days, Germany formally surrendered on May 7, with Victory in Europe (V-E) Day officially celebrated on May 8, 1945. The European war had caused an estimated 40–50 million deaths, making it the deadliest conflict in human history up to that time. For Allied servicemen, the news often brought a mixture of relief, exhaustion, and disbelief. Many still faced months of deployment, as the Pacific war against Japan would continue until September 1945.
