3/4 Species that inhabit large, conspicuous colonies are important economic components (i.e. tourism), important for social cohesion, identification w/ symbolic meanings for the first inhabitants. Source of inspiration , physical, mental and emotional health. #WSTC4 #ConsBio2

2/4 Seabirds are of highly intrinsic value per se. Given their abundance and as top and meso predators are very important in seascape formation, biological control and nutrient cycling, instrumental values not well studied and even less communicated to society. #WSTC4 #ConsBio2

1/4 I love animals. If someone asks me why to protect seabirds? I say because they are cute! Although, different sectors in a society perceive nature, (and seabirds), in a different way. Recognizing seabirds´ values is crucial for conservation. #WSTC4 #ConsBio2

The final presentation in our #ConsBio2 session is @andrearayarey2 exploring the social value of seabirds for humans. Why to protect top predators? The value of seabirds and marine mammals on the social-ecological seascape in the Beagle Channel. #WSTC4

2/4 Descubrimos que esta especie nidifica en medio del Desierto de Atacama, cerca de Diego de Almagro, Chile. La colonia está a 75 kilómetros de la costa, a 1100 msnm #WSTC4 #ConsBio2 #ROC

Thanks Edward! 1/4 Hornby’s Storm-petrel is 1 of the least known seabirds. Nothing was known about their breeding colonies until now #WSTC4 #ConsBio2 #ROC 🇨🇱

4/4 It indicates a very targeted foraging/behavioral adjustment in a major predator species in the Anthropocene; humans are by now the main provider for such species and it requires such a management, globally. #ConsBio2 #WSTC4

2/4 Antarctic skuas are linked with global human activities, e.g. from Antarctic peninsula to South America and the Northern hemisphere (Pacific and Atlantic; Kopp et al. 2011). #ConsBio2 #WSTC4
