Saratov Communist Leader Detained Over May Day Motorcade
Police in #Saratov have detained Alexander Anidalov, head of the #CPRF faction in the regional legislature and a prospective #StateDuma candidate.
Anidalov was charged with organizing an unauthorized public event. The case appears to stem from a May Day motorcade organized by CPRF activists. Participants drove through the city carrying Communist symbols and unfurled a large red flag in the city center.
At the time, local Communists framed the event as an alternative to traditional May Day demonstrations, arguing that restrictions on rallies and marches left them with few options for public political activity.
Anidalov currently leads the CPRF faction in the Saratov Regional Duma and announced in April that he would seek nomination for the 2026 State Duma elections.
The case adds to a broader pattern of administrative pressure on opposition politicians and candidates ahead of the upcoming federal election campaign.

Crackdown on Communists Continues in Altai Region Ahead of Elections
Siloviki in #Altai region have detained two more members of #CPRF: regional party secretary Vitaly Buldakov and former chief accountant Natalya Chistokletova. The news was announced by Maria Prusakova, head of the regional Communist branch and a #StateDuma MP.
This follows a broader wave of pressure against local Communists:
– In November 2025, regional MP Lyudmila Klyushnikova and her aide Svetlana Kerber were arrested on fraud charges.
– In February 2026, two more Communist deputies — Andrey Chernobay and Yury Kropotin — were detained.
– In April 2026, police detained Anna Yartseva, aide to regional MP Igor Galkin.
The crackdown intensified after Prusakova herself was blocked from running in the 2023 gubernatorial election after failing to pass Russia’s “municipal filter”.
Experts disagree on how this will affect the party ahead of September elections. Some believe the repression damages the Communists’ credibility, while others argue it could mobilize the party’s core electorate and strengthen its image as a political victim.

#CPRF primaries: 2.5 million voters, predictable leaders
Around 2.5 million voters took part in the Communist party #StateDuma primaries; of these, approximately 100,000 votes were cast online, whilst over 2 million were cast on paper ballots.
The top three among 230 candidates were: State Duma MP from the #Samara region Mikhail Matveev, State Duma MP from the #Komi Republic Oleg Mikhaylov, State Duma MP from #Moscow Sergei Obukhov. A number of chairs of regional CPRF branches and regional MPs are also leading the vote. Overall, the top twenty are mainly made up of State Duma deputies.
The results will be reviewed by the personnel commission, the presidium, and the plenum of the CPRF Central Committee, with the final list of candidates for the State Duma elections to be approved at the party congress scheduled for June 20.
According to a CPRF spokesperson, around 20% of the party’s State Duma deputies will be replaced.

CPRF bets on the Kremlin’s most inconvenient candidates
Some of #CPRF’s most outspoken and controversial politicians are leading the party’s internal “People’s Candidate” vote ahead of the 2026 #StateDuma elections.
The top three among 230 candidates are currently:
– Mikhail Matveev, Duma MP, #Samara
– Oleg Mikhaylov, Duma MP, #Komi
– Nikolai Bondarenko, politician and YouTube star (2+ mln follovers), #Saratov
All three are known for sharp political statements and criticism on sensitive issues. Matveev and Mikhaylov unexpectedly won single-member districts in 2021 without being part of the Kremlin-approved shortlist for the State Duma. Now, in 2026, #UnitedRussia is fielding much stronger opponents against them, including veterans of the war against Ukraine. Analysts believe the #Kremlin will do everything possible to block their re-election in district races.
That leaves the CPRF with either risking losing them in competitive districts, or placing them high on the federal party list, potentially strengthening the party’s overall campaign.

United Russia Pits War Veterans Against Kremlin-Unfriendly Communist Candidates
#UnitedRussia is increasingly nominating veterans of the war against Ukraine against strong or “inconvenient” candidates from #CPRF ahead of the 2026 #StateDuma elections.
The Communists are still holding their internal “People’s Candidate” primaries, but several of the leading contenders are already facing pro-war candidates emerging from United Russia’s own primaries.
In particular:
– in #Komi Republic, United Russia is fielding a war veteran against Communist MP Oleg Mikhaylov
– in #MariEl Republic, pro-war candidates are being positioned against Communist politician Sergey Kazankov
– in the occupied so-called Luhansk People's Republic, Communist war veteran Vitaly Narizhny will reportedly face a United Russia candidate who also fought in the war

United Russia Primaries: 535 War "Veterans" Compete for 450 Duma Seats
Registration for #UnitedRussia #primaries has officially closed. In total, 4,400 candidates are competing for the party’s 450 seats in the #StateDuma — roughly 10 candidates per seat.
Among them are:
– 535 participants in the war against Ukraine (12% of all candidates)
– 9 generals (only 5 of them are current MPs)
– 31 "Heroes of Russia", most awarded during the invasion of Ukraine
Meanwhile, voter registration for the primaries continues until May 29. More than 8 million people have already registered in the system. The media and observers reported that public sector employees, including students, were being massively coerced into registering on the primaries website. The vote itself is scheduled for early June.

Three Communists make Russia’s post-Putin top 10 — Levada poll
According to @Levada_ru, three representatives of #CPRF made the list of Russia’s most-mentioned politicians after #Putin.
In the open-ended survey, where respondents named candidates themselves, Putin received 49%. Everyone else scored between just 0.2% and 1.1%.
The Communist figures in the top 10:
– Gennady Zyuganov (CPRF leader)
– Nikolai Bondarenko (#Samara, YouTube Blogger)
– Pavel Grudinin (ex-presidential candidate)
Respondents also mentioned the members of Government and the Security council:
– Mikhail Mishustin (Prime-minister)
– Sergey Lavrov (Minister of foreign affairs)
– Andrey Belousov (Minister of defense)
– Dmitry Medvedev (Deputy head of the Security council)
Also, all parliament parties leaders were mentioned:
– Vladislav Davankov (#NewPeople)
– Leonid Slutsky (#LDPR)
– Sergey Mironov (#JustRussia)
Not a single representative of #Yabloko or any non-parliamentary opposition party made the ranking.
Meanwhile:
– 20% said they don’t know who they would vote for
– 17% said they would not vote at all

Putin’s electoral rating falls below 50% for the first time since the invasion — Levada
According to @Levada_ru, #Putin’s electoral rating has dropped below 50% for the first time since the start of the full-scale war against Ukraine.
In an open-ended question, where respondents named candidates themselves, without prompts, only 49% said they would vote for Putin if a presidential election were held next Sunday.
📉 Putin’s support more than doubled during the first two years of war, but and is now steadily declining.
At its peak, ahead of the 2024 presidential election, his approval rating stood at 68%. However, immediately prior to the start of the invasion of Ukraine, Putin’s approval rating was significantly lower than it is now, at 32%.
If this declining trend continues toward the next scheduled election in 2030, the #Kremlin may once again face the challenge of how to rapidly boost falling ratings.

Russians Expect Communists to Take Second Place in 2026 State Duma Elections
More than half of respondents surveyed by the independent research center @RusFieldGroup believe that #CPRF and #LDPR will compete for second place in the State Duma elections in 2026. Slightly more respondents currently expect the communists to come out ahead.
According to the pollsters, these numbers reflect respondents’ perceptions of the real political balance of power, rather than their personal voting preferences.
For example, confidence in a second-place finish for the Communist Party is shared not only by its own supporters but also by nearly one-third of voters backing the party #NewPeople and more than half of supporters of #Yabloko.

The Polylog project calculated how many votes parliamentary parties won in Russia’s 2025 regional assembly elections (party lists, single electoral districts):
🐻 #United_Russia — 3,057,000 votes (+929k vs 2020 in the same regions)
🔵 #LDPR — 464k (+9k)
🔴 #CPRF — 444k (–148k)
🟡 #SRZP — 334k (–12k)
🟣 #New_People — 279k (+184k; in 2020 participated in 4 campaigns, this year in 9 of 11)
These results signal an important shift in Russia’s party landscape ahead of the 2026 State Duma elections.
LDPR is clearly consolidating its role as the country’s second party. At the same time, New People are on the rise, threatening to push SRZP into the smallest faction in the Duma.
Meanwhile, CPRF continues to steadily lose regional voters. Why this is happening — see repost 👇

Decommunization of Russia’s regions – the main outcome of the 2025 regional elections
The key intrigue of the 2025 regional elections, according to experts, was the competition between “Liberal-Democratic Party of Russia” (LDPR) and the Communist Party (СPRF) for the status of the “second party” after United Russia. This matters ahead of the 2026 @State_Duma campaign.
Before the elections, polls showed LDPR was about to push СPRF from second place in regional parliamentary races: in many regions LDPR overtook or equaled the communists.
📍 Results by regions:
#Komi: unchanged, both parties tied
#Kaluga: CPRF -3%, LDPR +1%, tied
#Belgorod: CPRF -5%, LDPR +2%
#Voronezh: CPRF -5%
#Kostroma: CPRF -6%, LDPR +1%
#Kurgan: CPRF -9%, LDPR -2%
#Magadan: CPRF -2%, LDPR +1%
#Novosibirsk: CPRF -6%, LDPR -4%
#Ryazan: CPRF -3%, LDPR -4%
#Chelyabinsk: CPRF -6%, LDPR -2%
Yamal-Nenets AO (#YNAO): CPRF +2%, LDPR +1%
📊 On average: CPRF loses 2–9% (only one region shows +2%). LDPR declines in 4 regions (by 2–4%) but grows in 5 (by 1–2%). In 5 out of 11 regions with elections to regional parliaments, LDPR displaced CPRF from second place.
Importantly, unlike CPRF, LDPR did not compete for the role of the main opposition but acted as a “second state party.” The main outcome of the 2025 campaign: LDPR becomes the second most influential party in the regions. Its role is to attract votes of those “for Putin, but against officials.” In regional parliaments, LDPR deputies almost always vote in solidarity with United Russia.
CPRF faces pressure both from below and above. From below, part of the protest electorate became disillusioned with CPRF due to its support for the war against Ukraine. From above, the #Kremlin still treats CPRF as the main opposition, so its candidates face barriers to registration. The strengthening of the Pensioners’ Party, a spoiler aimed against the communists, also reflects increased pressure on the left flank.
Meanwhile, the New People party is gradually consolidating as a systemic liberal opposition party, with strong results in local elections in Novosibirsk, Smolensk, Chelyabinsk, Orenburg, Magadan, and Stavropol.
The fifth parliamentary party, A Just Russia (#SRZP), also declined. Beyond losses in most regions, SR lost parliamentary representation altogether in Voronezh and Ryazan. The party faces a clear image crisis: like LDPR, it supports #Putin; like CPRF, it supports the war; and it does not position itself as opposition either on the left or on the liberal flank.

🇷🇺 Russia’s municipal elections: Kremlin promotes spoilers against CPRF, blocks Yabloko
Candidate registration for September’s municipal elections is over, and the results show a clear pattern:
✅ All five parliamentary parties (#United_Russia, #CPRF, #LDPR, #SRZP, #New_People) were registered without problems.
🚫 Non-parliamentary parties faced obstacles — and here the Kremlin’s “spoiler” strategy is obvious.
Who advanced most successfully?
🔴 Pensioners’ Party → will be on ballots in 10 of 11 cities where it nominated lists.
🔴 Communists of Russia → made it into 8 cities (out of 9).
🔴 Rodina → approved in 5 cities (out of 10).
Who lost?
🍏 @YablokoParty: tried to run in 12 regional capitals but was blocked in 8 of them by local election commissions.
Other small parties (“Civil Platform,” “Russian Party of Freedom and Justice,” “Green Alternative”) managed to register only a single list each.
📊 Where competition is strongest?
Cheboksary (#Chuvashiya Republic): record → 11 parties on the ballot, including 6 non-parliamentary (Pensioners’ Party, Communists of Russia, Rodina, Greens, Social Protection Party, Civil Platform).
Kaluga & Syktyvkar (#Komi Republic): 8 parties each.
👥 Most competitive race → Syktyvkar, with 8 candidates per seat.
📌 In total, 14 parties (out of 23 registered nationwide) will compete in city council elections across 25 regional capitals. But in 4 cities — Izhevsk, Makhachkala, Magadan, Stavropol, Ulyanovsk — voters will only see the same five parliamentary parties on the ballot.

At Least 11 Parties to Take Part in 🇷🇺 Regional Parliamentary Elections
Only half — 12 out of 23 political parties — managed to nominate party lists for the September elections to regional parliaments. All but one of them successfully passed the registration stage (see chart).
The four parliamentary parties — #United_Russia, #CPRF, #LDPR, and A Just Russia (#SRZP) — will be represented in all 11 regions where legislative assembly elections are being held. The fifth @State_Duma party, #New_People, registered its lists in nine regions — except in #Belgorod Region and the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (#YNAO).
The most active among non-parliamentary parties — as in the gubernatorial elections (see repost) — were spoiler parties of the CPRF: the Party of Pensioners (7 regions) and Communists of Russia (4 regions). They faced no refusals in registration, which indicates that the #Kremlin finds their participation in elections beneficial.
The party Rodina suffered the greatest losses, managing to collect the required signatures and register lists in only three (out of five) regions. In two regions, the Greens party made it onto the ballot.
One list each was registered by the Russian Party of Freedom and Justice (RPSS) and Green Alternative; the Party of Social Protection (PSZ) could join them if it is reinstated in the elections.
As for the level of competition by region, the leader remains the #Komi Republic, where all nine nominated party lists were registered. Second place is shared by #Novosibirsk and #Ryazan regions (eight each), but #Kostroma Region (seven) could join them if PSZ is reinstated. The lowest diversity is in #Magadan Region (five lists) and YNAO (four), where only the Duma parties will appear on the ballot.
