Then you could somehow independently cover it with tests and fix bugs.
Technical Debt will always find you; upgrade is one such places 🤷🏻♂️

Upgrade = must have (security/performance/new technology)
Buggy code = must NOT have 😅

If it is good - the upgrade is easy.

99% of 3rd parties do not take care about creating&keeping extension points, as well as their APIs between modules.
That is why most of such customisations are lead to be refined very soon

Sad, but not properly fixed may have a higher cost in a long term than a one-time investment in fixing it.
If the code related to feature that business is not using anymore - remove it and save time during next upgrades.

Usually, one of these options would work:
1) Check with the extension vendor if (and when) they are going to release the new version to fix compatibility. Hold upgrade until.

2. No new version? Then remove it for now - do not allow smth to block you for too long. Once done with other packages - get back to solving this problem

Upgrades, especially big ones, need to be done step by step.
If some package does not work and blocks you - remove it and move on.
Make MVP with the upgrade and only then solve that one/two/20 incompatible packages trouble.

@OleksKravchuk @Cloudways Exceptions are trusted 3rd party vendors that follow the Magento coding standards, and semantic versioning and are designed to be easily extensible.
In this case, when the development best practices are respected, 3rd party compatibility issues would be avoided.

* update plugin for composer ✅
* define what is not compatible and make it compatible ✅ (upgrade/replace)
* big red button strategy - remove all questionable packages ✅

@OleksKravchuk @Cloudways To conclude, it is preferable to use 3rd party extensions when the features they provide are enough to fulfill your project needs with minimal customizations or without them.
If not, custom development would be a more reliable way.

However, I would suggest you be on the edge as much as it is possible.

1) remove all 3’rd party extension
2) proceed with Magento and its dependencies upgrade 3) re-install removed extensions.
