🔴 #DabbaghCase: One year ago, on 24 May 2024, the Paris Criminal Court delivered a historic ruling: it found Ali Mamlouk, Jamil Hassan, and Abdel Salam Mahmoud—three senior officials of the fallen regime of Bashar al-Assad—guilty of complicity in crimes against humanity and war crimes committed against Mazzen and Patrick #Dabbagh, a Franco-Syrian father and his son.
The three high officials were convicted and sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment. This was the first trial in #France related to crimes committed by the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad.

🔴#Dabbaghcase : The #Paris Criminal Court has just found three high-ranking Syrian officials - Ali Mamlouk, Jamil Hassan and Abdel Salam Mahmoud - guilty of complicity in crimes against humanity and war crimes committed against Patrick and Mazzen #Dabbagh. They were sentenced to life imprisonment.
According to Clémence Bectarte, lawyer for the @fidh_fr, the Dabbagh family and the Syrian centre for media and freedom of expression (@SyrianCenter), the civil parties:
"This trial has highlighted the incredible determination and courage of the Syrians, particularly Obeida and Hanane Dabbagh, in their relentless fight against impunity for the crimes committed by the regime".

🔴#Dabbaghcase : This morning was devoted to the closing arguments of the lawyer for the civil parties. Clémence Bectarte, lawyer for the Dabbagh family, @fidh_fr and the Syrian Centre for Media a Freedom of Expression (@SyrianCenter) , spoke for just over two hours.
In front of the empty defendant’s box, she pointed out that Ali Mamlouk, Jamil Hassan and Abdel Salam Mahmoud – accused of complicity in #CrimesAgainstHumanity and #WarCrimes – had chosen not to appoint a lawyer: further proof of their “feeling of impunity.”🧵👇

🔴#DabbaghCase : At the end of the day, after the #Dabbaghs, a final civil party took the floor. Mazen Darwich is a Syrian lawyer, a prominent defender of #Freedomofexpression and #HumanRights and co-founder of the Syrian Centre for Media and Freedom of Expression (@SyrianCenter).
During a raid on the association's premises by the air force intelligence services, he was arrested along with all of his colleagues on February 12, 2012 in #Damascus.🧵👇

🔴#Dabbaghcase: The public prosecutor considers that Patrick and Mazzen #Dabbagh were victims of imprisonment, acts of torture, enforced disappearances and murder – constituting crimes against humanity, as well as extortion concerning the family home.
She asks the Court to sentence the three defendants - Ali Mamlouk, Jamil Hassan and Abdel Salam Mahmoud – to life imprisonment for complicity in these crimes.
The Court will deliver its verdict by the end of the day. Press release to follow.

🔴#Dabbaghcase : Since yesterday, the voices of Syrians have been resonating in the #Paris Criminal Court. They tell of the detention centres, the omnipresent torture, the abuses suffered, the children and elderly arrested and tortured.
The witnesses were all detained for a time at the detention centre at #Mezzeh military airport, near #Damascus, run by the Syrian Air Force's dreaded intelligence services, where Mazzen and Patrick #Dabbagh were last seen alive. 🧵👇

🔴#DabbaghCase: First morning of the trial - filmed "for history" - of the three high-ranking Syrian intelligence officials, before the #Paris Criminal Court.
The presiding judge recounted the disappearance of Patrick and Mazzen Dabbagh in 2013, and described in broad strokes the situation in Syria since Hafez al-Assad (father of now president, Bashar al-Assad), was in power in Syria.
He then provided the identities of the three defendants, whom the court considers to be absent “without valid excuse” and “to be tried in absentia.” 🧵👇
