Is there anything else about the pitch you think is vital? What do you include - or what do you wish we asked for? Let us know! #DATips
3) Author! Who are you? Why do you want to work with us? Why do we want to work with you? Keep it simple (see point 1) but show us your personality, so we're excited to partner up #DATips
2) Audience! Who is your book for? That can be comps (fans of X author) or just the readership (ie. bookish 10-year olds or romantasy fans looking for ๐ถ๏ธ) #DATips

It's #DATips time! And this week we've been judging a competition, so let's talk first pages. What do your opening lines need to do?
If you open at the right place in your story, with a confident, clear voice that shows us we're in great storytelling hands, we'll be excited to read on - and then we'll be hooked! #DATips
The other thing we're looking for in those opening lines is voice. Are these pages letting your unique writing voice come through? Do we see who you are as a writer? This is where careful edits are the most useful #DATips
So pin down where your story truly starts - the moment that the ordinary changes - and write that as your opening chapter #DATips
The flipside of this is that sometimes the chapters open too far into a story - in a big battle, a magical high point etc. We need some level of understanding before we get here #DATips
Sometimes full chapters will go by that set up someone's ordinary day - again, useful, but this is stuff that happens before the story starts. So open your book at the start of your story! #DATips
There are a few things we see a lot that don't work - looking in a mirror, waking up, in a car etc. This is scene-setting, and it's important to know, but better to weave in elsewhere #DATips
Your first pages are probably the most important part of any submission. Agents decide quickly if they want to read on or not - most of us can tell in a couple of paragraphs. So they have to work hard! #DATips
