What Decred forgot was product-market fit.
So was the community wrong to remain cemented to its ideals?
Yes and no.
True sovereignty requires exactly what Decred built. Without those protections, most of this industry is just centralized finance calling itself a revolution.
It is not much of a revolution if someone else still holds the keys.
But Decred made the opposite mistake.
It built for purity and ignored human behavior.
The overwhelming majority of trading activity flows toward products with minimal friction, deep liquidity and proper tooling for market makers and liquidity providers.
Period.
The usual response is that Decred’s architecture cannot support those features.
Fine.
The market has already answered.
After roughly eight years, Bison Wallet has, for all practical purposes, one meaningful trading pair and a few hundred thousand dollars in liquidity.
For those who have been around long enough, you could make the ugly argument that Ditto was money better spent.
That should sting.
Because without atomic swaps, Decred becomes just another project making vague claims about decentralization.
With them, Decred possesses something actually quite rare—something cypherpunks have been working toward since the beginning of the computer age:
The ability to exchange value without asking permission. Without a man in the middle.
That is the foundation.
It is not the finished product.
So the question becomes what will it take for Decred & Bison Wallet to become relevant?
A serious Layer 2 roadmap.
Perpetuals, because nearly every successful exchange—from Kraken to ThorChain—offers them.

Custodial and collaborative custody services, including products inspired by CASA.
Not because custody is more sovereign than atomic swaps.
Because a viable financial platform should give users choices—and then let them decide how much sovereignty they are prepared to exercise.
That is what could turn Bison Wallet from an ideological achievement into a living financial system.
But products alone will not save it.
Decred also needs a community built around those products.
Hackathons.
Developer incentives.
Liquidity programs.
Education.
Outreach.

And yes, Decred needs a marketing strategy designed before launch—not six months later, after nobody shows up.
For years, Decred claimed adaptation was its greatest strength.
Now that claim has to become real.
Adaptation requires vision.
It will require leadership.
It will require admitting where the project has objectivly fallen short.
The market has spoken.
It did not reject sovereignty.
It rejected a product that stopped halfway.
Bitcoin gave us sound money.
Decred gives us sound governance (use it to build proper products that people use).
