Chainlink is undeniably a pioneer in the oracle space. this moment isn't about highlighting their failure.
Instead, it's should be a wake-up call for our industry. There's an urgent need to build oracles capable of powering stablecoins and Real world Assets at scale.
But first, here's a breakdown of what just occurred:
One sandwich trade in a thin pool pushed deUSD to $1.028 for a single block.
Chainlink VWAP-based feed relayed that spike cross-chain and ~$500K in positions were liquidated
Even though the price changed in only one DEX for a single block due to a single trade.
~$200k trade moving the oracle price of an $185M asset?
In this particular oracle design, it could, and it did — even though the price immediately returned to parity after the backrun was executed.
The "one-size-fits-all" oracle design doesn't fit assets with unique economics, like stablecoins and RWAs.
The issue with deUSD wasn't a technical glitch it was a design oversight rooted in this generalized approach, overlooking critical realities.
- Thin Liquidity: The shallow deUSD pool meant a single ~$210K trade (~50% of daily volume) briefly dominated its VWAP calculation, significantly skewing the oracle price.
VWAP is great for deep, uncorrelated markets, but it’s fragile for thin-liquidity assets that are correlated to $1:
One oversized swap can dominate the day’s volume.
Stablecoins shouldn’t clear far above $1 for more than seconds; anything else is usually noise.

It is time for modular oracles:
This isn't about reinventing the wheel, but about asset-specific intelligence:
- Respect the Peg: For fiat-backed stablecoins, oracles should treat prices significantly above $1 (e.g., >$1.005) as anomalies. Filter them out or heavily discount them. The $1 fundamental value is the anchor.
- For Robust Stablecoin Feeds: Stablecoins are becoming one of the most important growth factors in DeFi. For mass adoption, their oracles must increasingly rely on Proof-of-Reserves (PoR) or NAV-based feeds. This approach inherently enhances transparency, significantly reduces manipulation risk, and will likely improve capital efficiency.
