THROWBACK THURSDAY for 3/5/2026 Looking Back to 1984 By Chris Tilley Photo by David Allio at Ponderosa Speedway (6/10/1984) of Jerry Inmon (#D7) and his Chevrolet Camaro & Charles “Red” Farmer (#F97) driving his Ford Thunderbird. The National Average price of eggs was .38 cents per dozen, milk was $1.16 per gallon, a 2-liter bottle of Coca-Cola or Pepsi was .99 cents, the average cost of a movie ticket was $3.55 and the average cost of a gallon of gasoline was $1.10-$1.20. On June 10, 1984, Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, KY hosted the NASCAR Busch/Southern All Stars 50-lap $2,000 to win event with Gordon Fortenberry of Columbus, MS taking the victory over Ruben Maxey. Notables in the field included Jerry Inmon, Red Farmer, NASCAR Series Star Bobby Allison (who drove Tommy Sampson’s car from Shelbyville, KY), Mike Duvall, Jeff Purvis, Eddie Pace, Russ Petro, Eddie Carrier, Paul Fesitritzer among others. 4/20/1984-Two big races for Late Models plus Tom T. Hall as the guest entertainment headlined the event at Red River Motor Speedway located in Clay City, KY. In the Stock Body Late Models, Ray Godsey would set fast time with a 19.99 lap and win the feature over Carl Collins, Russ Petro, Mike Jewell, Lucky Wireman & Pete Willoughby. In the Outlaw Late Models, Davd Dixon was fast time (18.75) and won over John Holt, Billy Teegarden, Steve Francis, Randy Boggs, Richard Hall, Ron Allen, Buddy Cotton, Benny Feltner, Charles Noble, Burt Mingey, Tom Curtsinger & Eddie Carrier. 6/1/1984-Kenny Simpson claimed the victory at I-65 Speedway over Ray Godsey, Gerald Dixon, Mike Jewell & Dill Whittymore. 6/1/1984-In a Skoal Bandit $2,000-to-win special at Ponderosa Speedway, Eddie Carrier claimed payday over Russ Petro, Paul Feistritzer, Gary Herbert & Dale Atwood. 6/2/1984-David Dixon took home the $1,000 in the feature race at the Perry County Speedway in Hazard, KY over Walter Combs, Eddie Carrier, Benny Feltner & Paul Harris. 6/5/1984-Phil Gregory of Russellville, KY claimed the victory at Paducah International Raceway over Bill Hay, Jerry English, Emmitt Groves & Steve Carnes. 6/8/1984-Gerald Dixon of Sellersburg, IN was the winner at I65 Speedway in Scottsburg, IN over Kenny Simpson, Jim Curry, Paul Crockett & Sam Murphy. 6/8/1984-Ricky Spalding of Raywick, Ky won at Ponderosa Speedway over Finn Watson, Billy Selby, Charles Curtsinger & Harold Hardgrove. 6/9/1984-The Tazewell Memorial 100 was held at Tazewell (TN) Speedway and Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN took home the $1,500 victory over Herman Goddard, J.T. Kerr, Rocky Estes, Jack Wright, Jim Arnwine, H.E. Vineyard, Mike Houston, Dwayne Holt & Randy Tharp. 6/15/1984-Russ Petro made the trip from Indiana worthwhile as he claimed the Skoal Bandit feature at Ponderosa Speedway over E.M. Snowden, Matt Gilardi, Dale Atwood, Ricky Spalding, Fats Coffey, Finn Watson, Billy Carroll Wooldridge, Billy Selby & Ricky Snowden. 6/15/1984-I-65 Speedway held twin 20-lap features. In the first feature, Kenny Simpson claimed the victory over Noel Witcher, Kevin Claycomb, Charlie Sentman & Gerald Dixon. Simpson again claimed victory in the second feature race by winning over Jim Curry, Kevin Claycomb, Charlie Sentman & Don Hobbs. 6/16/1984-Edwin Anthony was victorious at Barren County (KY) Speedway over Jeff Napper, Larry Bullington, Larry Crady & Steve Davis. 6/30/1984-Billy Childers of Lexington, KY took home the victory in the UMP Late Models at Barren County Speedway in Glasgow, KY claiming the payday over Gerald Dixon of Indiana. 7/7/1984-Vern LeFevers again showed why he was “Saturday Night LeFevers” dominating the $1,500 UMP Late Model feature at Florence, KY winning over Billy Teegarden, Chuck McWilliams, Earl Smith, Ed Hounshell, Dan Polking, Bobby Carnes, Steve Landrum, Larry Pickleheimer & Kenny Kenneda.
