Wrapping up a 2nd round of #FishABC: Z is for Balitoropsis zollingeri, the Black Lizard Loach. This species is found in the Mekong river basin, as well as Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo & Java.

#FishABC: Y is for Homalopteroides yuwonoi. Described in 1998, this hillstream loach is another Borneo endemic, and is only known from fast-flowing streams in the vicinity of Danau Sentarum Wildlife Reserve, in the upper basin of the Kapuas, West Kalimantan.

#FishABC: X is for Barbodes xouthos. Described in 2011, this barb is endemic to Brunei in northern Borneo. It appears to be restricted to the Tutong & Belait districts, with the type series coming from Sungai Merimbun & Tasek (Lake) Merimbun in Tutong.

#FishABC: W is for Wallago attu, the Wallago or Helicopter Catfish. This large predatory silurid is widely distributed in South & Southeast Asia, but may be extinct in Java.

#FishABC: V is for Vaillantella maassi, the Fork-tailed Loach. This species, 1 of the 3 members of Vaillantellidae, lives in forest streams in parts of Sumatra, Borneo, Peninsular Malaysia & southern Thailand.

#FishABC: U is for Oxyeleotris urophthalmoides. This species of sleeper has been recorded in freshwater streams in Sumatra and Borneo, and may possibly also occur in mangroves.

#FishABC: U is for Oxyeleotris urophthalmus, the Sinuous Gudgeon. This species is widespread in Southeast Asia but uncommon in Singapore; it occurs in the lower reaches of freshwater rivers & streams, as well as in mangroves.

#FishABC: T is for Toxotes jaculatrix, the Banded Archerfish. An inhabitant of Singapore's coastal marine habitats, mangroves, and estuaries, this is another species capable of living in freshwater.

#FishABC: T is for Trichopodus leerii, the Pearl Gourami. Very common in the aquarium hobby, this gourami is native to Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra & Borneo, and lives in association with peat swamp & freshwater swamp forests.

#FishABC: S is for Sundasalanx, the Sundaland noodlefishes, which also qualify for #FishEponym. These are paedomorphic freshwater clupeiforms of Southeast Asia, i.e. close relatives of herrings & sardines. Pictured here is Sundasalanx microps from Borneo.

#FishABC: S is for Sundadanio. Also #FishEponym, since this genus was named for the Greater Sunda Islands, which include Sumatra & Borneo, where these tiny fishes have been found. At first, only a single species, Sundadanio axelrodi, was known.

#FishABC: S is for Stigmatogobius sella, the Sharp-nosed Knight Goby. This goby lives in small, shallow pools & creeks in mangroves of Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, and Borneo, but is also known from freshwater habitats in some areas.

#FishABC: R is for Rasbora notura. This species was described in 2005, and occurs in northeastern Peninsular Malaysia, in the states of Terengganu & Kelantan. New species of Rasbora are still being described regularly.
