HOW ELON MUSK BUILT ONE OF THE GREATEST FORTUNES IN MODERN HISTORY.
Most people know Elon Musk as the richest man in the world. What many don't know is how close he came to losing everything before he got there.
Elon Musk was born in Pretoria, South Africa, in 1971. As a child, he was fascinated by books, science, and computers. He taught himself programming and, at the age of 12, created and sold a simple video game called Blastar. It wasn't about the money it was the first sign that he could turn ideas into reality.
At 17, he left South Africa for Canada in search of greater opportunities. He worked different jobs, continued his education, and eventually earned degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. Rather than pursuing a traditional career, he chose entrepreneurship.
In 1995, he left a PhD program after only two days to build an internet startup called Zip2. At the time, the internet was still in its early stages, and very few people believed in online businesses. Four years later, Zip2 was acquired, earning Musk about $22 million.

Most people would have stopped there.
He did the opposite.
Musk invested almost everything he had into three ambitious companies: SpaceX, Tesla, and SolarCity. It was one of the biggest financial risks of his life.
By 2008, both Tesla and SpaceX were on the verge of collapse. Cash was running out, investors were losing confidence, and failure seemed almost certain. Musk has since said that he believed both companies might not survive.
Then came the turning point.
SpaceX secured a major NASA contract, providing the funding it desperately needed. Tesla survived the financial crisis and gradually became one of the world's most valuable companies. Those two breakthroughs completely changed Musk's future.
Over the following years, SpaceX pioneered reusable rockets and dramatically reduced the cost of space launches. Tesla accelerated the global shift toward electric vehicles. Starlink expanded internet access around the world. Musk later acquired X, launched xAI, and continued investing in technologies aimed at shaping the future.
Today, Elon Musk's fortune is largely tied to the value of the companies he helped build. His story is not simply about becoming wealthy. It is about taking extraordinary risks, enduring repeated setbacks, and remaining committed to a long-term vision when almost everyone else doubted it.
Whether or not he becomes the world's first trillionaire, his journey has already become one of the most remarkable entrepreneurial stories of our time.
