This story in the @nytimes from 9 years ago that was published not long after George Sauer’s death explains a lot about the enigma that he was. He had the talent to be one of the all-time greats. A fascinating read. #Jets #GeorgeSauer https://t.co/KssLxHZz7w

On this day in 1971 WR George Sauer retired from pro football at the age of 27. Sauer was a 2x 1st team all pro who caught 8 balls for 133 yards in the Jets Super Bowl III win over Baltimore. https://t.co/m98ACn2hJl #TakeFlight #Jetshistory #Jets #AFL #NFL #SuperBowlII

A brilliant player and an enigma. Divided and tortured by the violence of football. He had hall of fame talent and walked away from football as his career was peaking. Instead, he was content to spend the rest of his life writing in total anonymity. #GeorgeSauer #Jets

I love seeing pro-athletes take time 4 the kids! I’ll never forget how the late @Jets’ wide receiver: #GeorgeSauer and Jets’ running back: #MattSnell used to come over and talk to us when we watched them practice at Hofstra. I still have their autographs! GR8 childhood memories!

@ChrisWesseling “even in the pros, you were told when to go to bed, when to turn your lights off, when to wake up, when to eat and what to eat.” #GeorgeSauer
