A Mayo Clinic-developed artificial intelligence (AI) model can help specialists detect pancreatic cancer on routine abdominal CT scans up to three years before clinical diagnosis. It identifies subtle signs of disease before tumors are visible, when curative treatment may still be possible. #Gleevec’s 25th Anniversary
Yesterday, I had the honor of joining a discussion with Dr. Brian Druker, MD, the physician/researcher behind Gleevec, & president of @OHSUKnight and Dr. Andy Kolb, MD, President and CEO of @BloodCancerUtd (BCU), (formerly known as The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society), to reflect on the 25-year impact of Gleevec and the rise of precision medicine. It was an honor to share this conversation with the entire BCU staff.
We talked about the science behind Gleevec, how targeted therapy changed the course of CML, and how one idea — shutting off the gene driving leukemia — helped transform cancer treatment forever.
But we also talked about something even bigger: time.
When I was first offered imatinib (Gleevec), CML was still considered fatal. None of us knew exactly what the future would look like. More than 25 years later, I’m still here — the world’s longest-living Gleevec survivor and living proof of what can happen when science, persistence, research funding, and hope come together.
One of the most meaningful parts of the discussion was reflecting on what that “more time” has meant: family moments, friendships, advocacy, helping recruit potential marrow donors, sharing my story, and simply getting to experience life in ways I once feared I might miss.
This event was especially meaningful as part of Gleevec’s 25th anniversary celebration. Gleevec was the world’s first tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI), and last year, the 100th TKI was approved — a milestone that speaks to how far this field has come. Blood Cancer United played a major role in helping fund the clinical trial.
Dr. Druker spoke about how Gleevec helped launch the era of precision medicine and how those same lessons are now being applied to aggressive blood cancers through efforts like Beat AML.
The science changed cancer care.
The people behind it changed lives.
